"The author of the best-selling Your Inner Fish, now gives us a lively and accessible account of the great transformations in the history of life, that enable us to further understand whether our presence on this planet is an accident or inevitable. The great transformations in the history of life brought about whole scale shifts in how animals live and how their bodies are organized: the evolution of fish to land-living creature, the origin of birds, the beginnings of bodies in single-celled creatures. Shubin describes how over the last half-century, scientists have been able to explore how genetic recipes build bodies during embryological development--how these inventions and adaptations occur in a nonprogressive manner in different contexts, at different speeds. Paleontology has been transformed over the last 50 years by tools and techniques of molecular biology--and it is that revolution in our understanding of the evolution of life that Shubin traces here. Each of us is a mosaic of precursors that came about at different times and places, with deep rooted connections across species that Darwin, for all he understood, could never even have imagined"--… (más)

OK, lesson learned. I'm not a fan of science writing. I want to be, but except for reading about the human body and medical stuff, which I find fascinating, the rest of the science world holds very little interest for me.

So I had a tough time staying engaged as I read SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. Although the topic of evolutionary biology is pretty cool on its own, I found the concepts presented challenging to understand at times. This is probably my failing rather than the author's. Still, I found my eyes glazing over constantly, and I often had to re-read entire paragraphs because I'd lost focus. ( )

I really REALLY enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure if such a short book could really do justice to the title of the book but I was not at all disappointed. I felt like the author packed so much information in so little time but gave a great overview with specific examples easy enough for my brain to understand. This covers evolution and the beginnings of life to decoding the genome and the future of where science will go. It was completely fascinating and I will look for more books by this scientist. 4.5 stars ( )

its a good book with a lot of good information about different individuals who studied genetics. ( )

A well written overview and primer on evolutionary microbiology that in general does a good job of introducing a very complex subject (although I will admit some of it went over my head.) Shubin mixes personal anecdotes with the stories of historical pioneers to weave a fascinating story of our current understanding of how and why things evolve the way we do. But there were times that I felt uncomfortable with some of the avenues of research being described as to me they moved beyond science in the pursuit of knowledge to science for science’s sake. In particular some of the gene splicing experiments raised some uncomfortable ethical questions in my mind. Just because we know how to do something, doesn’t always mean we should do it. ( )
