I really enjoyed this book, however I still had many questions after the book was finished and I discovered the author posted an epilogue on her website that was removed from the book. This answered some questions, but not all. Potential SPOILER - as I read other reviews I was led back to the strawberry scene, the Cerberus on the chalkboard, Bauer aligning with the leash of Cerberus, and the names of the characters in relation to Greek mythology. I found the book more intriguing after researching Persephone's kidnapping into Hades (which is guarded by Cerberus). I also researched the God Dionysus (Donny?). As well as Cassandra, whom in Greek Mythology was cursed to spout true prophecies that no one believed. This side research project overall gave me a greater satisfaction of the overall book. ( ) Cuts right to your heart This novel deals with some very uncomfortable issues that cut straight to the heart. Without being so descriptive as to deter a reader from reading it, the story tells enough to interpret these "unspeakable acts." And in some instances, it is just the mere thought that the main character, Cassie, is having that something might happen. The reader can feel her fear, her disgust, her rage...excellent piece of writing Ms. Lourey! Looking forward to reading more of your work. 3.5* Some might label this suspense novel historical fiction but I have not, being a believer in the 50-year rule (i.e. that to be historical fiction, the book must be set at least 50 years prior to the time it was written). That said, as I am old enough to remember them, I did enjoy the 1980s pop culture references (especially the TV show Remington Steele!). 3/5 This might be a YA book, as the protagonist is a teenager. this character is overly fond of metaphor and simile. Once more, a book about a family who enables a pendejo father. He's a Vietnam vet who doesn't work, but makes metal sculpture and sells dope. The mom is employed as a high school teacher. Dad gets drunk every night and the protagonist lies awake in terror, waiting to see if he'll come up the steps and into her room. When Cassie tells mom she's afraid of him, the mom gaslights her. 2020 Paperback P.115: Cassie's dad doesn't work and sells drugs, but because he has a master's degree, he's better than his neighbor Mr Gomez. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
"Cassie McDowell's life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents' strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she's grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed--violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who's responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface. Then Cassie's own sister undergoes the dark change. If she is to survive, Cassie must find her way in an adult world where every sin is justified, and only the truth is unforgivable." -- Provided by publisher.
