What at first seems like one sister exacting revenge for her younger sister's trauma becomes one heck of a lot more. It's a process that alternately tears and frees, while making readers shiver and shake their heads. ( ) Part of the reason why I picked up this book is because it's from Wattpad's new publishing company, and I'm interested in the books that they chose. I wound up enjoying it a lot. It read to me like a deep dive true crime podcast, with a twisting, engrossing plotline. It's long, but the pacing moves quickly. I will say that I think that this book is miscategorized as YA. The content is challenging, and it is at best a crossover, but I would sell this in an adult mystery or crime fiction section. I would recommend this book to mature fans of Courtney Summers or readers of Steig Larsson. CW for murder, sexual assault including rape on the page, physical torture, stalking, emotional manipulation and abuse, physical violence, substance use including date rape drugs, alcoholism. This was a great YA mystery that’s packed with drama, twists and a little bit of romance. The mystery isn’t quite what you might think when you first pick up the book. Right from page one, we know that Clara’s neighbor, Griffin has been killed. Shortly after that ominous night… we find out that Clara’s older sister, Emily has been charged with Griffin’s murder. The mystery of the novel is the answer to the question why did Emily kill Griffin? And that story unravels slowly throughout this novel. Cameron has written a fast-paced story that still keeps the reader hooked by not revealing everything too quickly. Clara is a complex character. She was fairly close to her older sister before she was arrested, but afterward, she is clearly struggling with the weight of the entire situation. When she befriends Kolby (Griffin’s best friend) Clara’s story becomes ever more complex. How can she be friends with Griffen’s best friend after what happened? The reality is that Kolby is one of the only people at school that will even speak to Clara. Nothing is what it seems in this story and that’s what makes it such an interesting read. I highly recommend this novel… with the caveat that it’s mature subject matter. Griffin Tomlin has been found dead and the entire community is in shock. According to everyone he was a good kid, but his neighbour Clara knows different. Clara's sister, Emily, has been charged with murder. She's in prison, awaiting trial, but she says she's innocent. High school reporter, Aniston Hale, befriends Clara because she wants to know the real story. There's some heavy content in here, but it's so well-written. I don't have words to describe this book. Everything feels so real and that's the scary part - stuff like this happens all the time. Lots of emotions and tension, and great character development throughout the book.
