While ringing in the New Year, Lord Peter stumbles into an ominous country mystery Lord Peter Wimsey and his manservant Bunter are halfway across the wild flatlands of East Anglia when they make a wrong turn, straight into a ditch. They scramble over the rough country to the nearest church, where they find hospitality, dinner, and an invitation to go bell-ringing. This ancient art is steeped in mathematical complexities, and tonight the rector and his friends plan to embark on a nine-hour marathon session to welcome the New Year. Lord Peter joins them, taking a step into a society whose cheerful exterior hides a dark, deadly past. During their stay in this unfamiliar countryside, Lord Peter and Bunter encounter murder, a mutilated corpse, and a decades-old jewel theft for which locals continue to die. In this land where bells toll for the dead, the ancient chimes never seem to stop. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Phenomenal.

Some might say there was too much about change-ringing, but in my opinion all of it fell into one of two camps: 1) very interesting or 2) should be read as flavorful gibberish without trying to parse it.

The language was extremely vibrant, I think this is so far the most beautifully written of the Wimsey books. I did figure out the final revelation (not the long complicated unraveling of circumstances, but that final missing piece) before Wimsey, and found it very disturbing but effective.

Would recommend. ( )

A Mystery Or Thriller

Contrary to my expectations, The Nine Tailors is not about the garment industry; instead, tailor is another name for bell, and the mystery revolves around eight bells hanging in a backwater church in England in the years after the First World War. Dorothy L. Sayers weaves a tale of intrigue involving her detective Lord Peter Wimsey, who crashes into the mystery of who stole a rich widow's emeralds and what happened to them after the theft. The mystery is peopled with a wealth of simple country folks and their simple country ways, plus more details about bell-ringing than you probably care to know or will necessarily find interesting. There's also a dead guy who has been beaten - after he was dead - to the point where he is unidentifiable. How, when and why he came to be deposited in the grave of a recently-deceased townswoman comprises the bulk of the mystery. The ultimate answers to these questions are delivered through a prolonged series of confessions by several characters involved in or concerned with the theft of the emeralds. While it makes sense that they would confess to save themselves from prosecution, it alleviates Wimsey of most of the burden of actually solving the mystery. The main mystery Wimsey solves is how the dead guy actually died, and the way he discovers it seems contrived. Any person with a smidgeon of common sense wouldn't do what Wimsey does in accidentally uncovering the truth behind the "murder."

While The Nine Tailors is a good story, I'm not convinced it merits its reputation as an outstanding mystery, in that the solution feels given rather than earned. ( )

Lord Peter incidentally becomes involved in a murder case when a grave is reopened to reveal a murdered man in Fenchurch St. Paul. ( )

Sometimes I really like the Wimsey stories, other times they just bug me. This one I'm honestly not sure. I'd read it years ago, but remembered almost nothing of it except for how the person whose body was found had actually died. I don't recall my first impression, but this time I found it a wonderful read in a lot of ways, except that it's full of weird little bits of English geography and custom (bell ringing!) that I don't have the background for. I have no idea if British readers in the 30s would have had the same idea.

So, a good book but a bit frustrating. The blurb on the cover of this edition calls it one of the five all-time great mystery novels; I cannot agree. ( )

The coil of rope which is necessary to hold in the hand, before, and whilst raising a bell, always puzzles a learner; it gets into his face, and perhaps around his neck (in which case he may be hanged!). TROYTE 'On Change Ringing'
