The Emperor’s Old Clothes, by Kathryn Lasky, is a continuation of the short tale called The Emperor’s New Clothes. Henry, a simple farm man finds some fine clothing one day and decides to try it on. The clothes make him feel special for a while but then things start to go wrong. This book teaches children that sometimes it is better to just be yourself. ( )

This is the story about the Emperor before he got his new clothes. Henry used to be a simple farmer working with his animals and his lamb. On a particularly bad day, Henry stumbled across a fancy new outfit. He slowly started putting the outfit on, piece by piece, until he felt very dashing. With a new confidence, Henry decided watch the Emperor's birthday parade. When he saw the Emperor there, he realized the Emperor was naked, but the lady next to him said they were "just new clothes." Henry decided to go home proud of his new clothes and expected all his farm animals to love them as well; however, he ran into some trouble.
I would classify this as a fantasy fiction.
I would read this to kindergarten through sixth grade.

Lots of fun. Not overly meaningful, but a clever twist that children will enjoy, and will learn a little lesson from. Dolly's review says it better. ( )

I like this book for its illustrations. David Catrow is one of my favorite illustrators, reminds me of Berke Breathed. The story though, that was kind silly and I didn't feel like it grabbed me. I understand the moral and I'm glad there was one, but the writing itself could have been less traditional and more humorous. One of the great parts of the Emperor's New Clothes is that children know a naked delusional king is funny, whereas a only the farm animals really understood the humor involved in their master's new duds.
