Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

The explosive first book in the multi-million selling Scottish crime fiction series.

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed 'Mister Whisper,' earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow's Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home. But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

A Litter of Bones is the darkly humourous debut crime thriller novel from Amazon number one bestselling author, JD Kirk, an exciting new voice in Scottish crime fiction. Perfect for fans of L.J. Ross, Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, and Stuart Macbride.

My Thoughts:
I've read JD Kirk 's Robert Hoon Thriller series first before I started reading this book. I understand that this series came first and that Hoon was the off-shoot story. However, I love Hoon so much that I wanted to read more of this author. I just hope that I haven't messed up royally by reading Hoon first before the DCI Logan series.

The main protagonist is DCI Logan and he is supposed to be the expert in the case having collared the original Mister Whisper. If it was Lt. Eve Dallas of the In Death series by JD Robb , then it would only be Dallas and Dallas alone who would know, catch and apprehend the perpetrator. Not the case here. Logan might be the main protagonist, but catching the perpetrator is a team effort. I love the In Death series! But I like the "team effort" better!

I like the way Angus King pinched his nose to give Jinkies his character.

A Litter of Bones by JD Kirk is the first book in a series about DCI Jack Logan. In this first book, we learn that Logan is haunted by a series of child killings that he eventually solved but unfortunately, he was never able to find the body of the last boy taken. Now ten years later, a copycat situation has arisen and Jack is called up on head up the team who are trying to find the newly kidnapped boy and bring him home alive.

I found this a fast moving story that held my interest although I was a little frustrated with Logan as he was so adamant that this new case could have no connection with the Mister Whisper case that he worked on years ago. His stubbornness resulted in a member of his team being sent into danger which could have been avoided. But overall the story was gripping and tense and the setting of a small Scottish town in the Highlands was well done with descriptions of the scenery and the weather which helped to add to the atmosphere.

The last thing I need is to get hooked by another series, so I am not going to follow up with the next book at this time. I also need to warn others that there is an element of animal torture in this story that I know many would find extremely offensive. ( )

Well written police procedural set in the Fort William area, featuring DCI Logan from the Glasgow Major Incident Team. Interesting, well drawn characters inside and outside the Police. ( )

You know that thing where you can't quite settle on your next read? A few days ago I tried out a couple of other books from my TBR, only to quickly put them down. I didn't want to be challenged, and I realized I didn't want a police procedural where the main character spends as much time fighting politically-driven bureaucrats as criminals. There's enough of that in real life these days.

This book hit just the right spot. DCI Logan, our hero, is definitely haunted by ghosts from the past, but in [b:A Litter of Bones|44678633|A Litter of Bones (DCI Logan Crime Thrillers, #1)|J.D. Kirk|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1554103862l/44678633._SY75_.jpg|69338337] some of them are put to rest. Based in Glasgow, he is assigned a missing child case in Fort William, in the Highlands. The local team assigned to him are for the most part good at their jobs and work with him cooperatively to find the kidnapper and save the child. Nothing remarkable in the story-telling or the characterizations, and only passing references to the beautiful scenery, but capably written with plenty of forward momentum to hold my attention.

I can't resist comparing this with another Scottish police procedural I read a couple of years ago with a main character named Logan (although in that case it's a first rather than a last name) and featuring child abductions, [b:Cold Granite|1182531|Cold Granite (Logan McRae, #1)|Stuart MacBride|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1308967905l/1182531._SY75_.jpg|1802767]. As I made clear in my review, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2780678596?book_show_action=false&from..., that author seems to really dislike women. By contrast, this book features two strong female members of Logan's team, and he makes his respect for them clear. Such a refreshing change.

I definitely have this series marked down for repeat visits when, as now, I'm so busy in my non-reading life that I just want to be distracted and entertained. ( )
