Dreary really captures the feel of the time with his descriptions of the beautiful French countryside now ravaged by war, the miseries the German soldiers faced as war came to an end, and the unstoppable influenza that was killing more men than the war itself.
Silver Hand was a truly evil villain as he mercilessly hunted the children with the aim to kill them. Often he was so close that it was only the ingenuity of either Aimee or Marius that saves them. Aimee was a forthright, determined young lady and could be rather judgemental at times but, thankfully, she did admit when she was wrong. I liked Marius more than Aimee. He was a gentle soul who just wanted to help others.
For younger readers, The Silver Hand was an engaging story with many nail-biting moments and perfect for introducing middle-primary students to an important period of time. ( )
