In New York Times bestselling author Nevada Barr's gripping standalone, a grandmother in her sixties emerges from a mental fog to find she's trapped in her worst nightmare Rose Dennis wakes up in a hospital gown, her brain in a fog, only to discover that she's been committed to an Alzheimer's Unit in a nursing home. With no memory of how she ended up in this position, Rose is sure that something is very wrong. When she overhears one of the administrators saying about her that she's "not making it through the week," Rose is convinced that if she's to survive, she has to get out of the nursing home. She avoids taking her medication, putting on a show for the aides, then stages her escape. The only problem is--how does she convince anyone that she's not actually demented? Her relatives were the ones to commit her, all the legal papers were drawn up, the authorities are on the side of the nursing home, and even she isn't sure she sounds completely sane. But any lingering doubt Rose herself might have had is erased when a would-be killer shows up in her house in the middle of the night. Now Rose knows that someone is determined to get rid of her. With the help of her computer hacker/recluse sister Marion, thirteen-year old granddaughter Mel, and Mel's friend Royal, Rose begins to gather her strength and fight back--to find out who is after her and take back control of her own life. But someone out there is still determined to kill Rose, and they're holding all the cards.… (más)

A cute and charming mystery. Though the culprits were pretty obvious as soon as what was happening became clear, and frankly, Rose seemed a little dense for not putting two and two together a little sooner, she and her granddaughter Mel were engaging and adorable, and it was fun to see the antics they got up to. 3.5. This was entertaining. Rose was quirky and smart and Mel was helpful and precocious. I enjoyed this. ( )

I found this a whole lot of fun. You need to go into it anticipating less Anna Pigeon and more Amelia Peabody. (Hmmm.... I didn't think of the symmetry of the A.P. initials when I searched for an appropriate contrasting character to Anna. Cosmic forces at work? Rose might think so.)

The characters are all entertaining - I quickly fell in love with Rose and her feisty spirit. The plot moves along briskly, and I was sorry when the book ended.

I've been reading some fairly serious non-fiction lately and it was refreshing to indulge myself in a book that was breezy and well written, and repeatedly had me grinning. Oh, and the narrator of the audio version matched the tone of the book perfectly. ( )

Leave it to Nevada Barr to create a serious murder mystery infused with so much humor! I have to admit that the beginning chapter left me as confused as Rose was when she starts her narration. But the situation soon clears and the story of elder abuse became more evident. This Rose certainly has her “thorns,” and she is determined at long last to free herself from her captors, that is, the dementia unit at Longwood. Escaping and free from their mind-numbing drugs, she is finally lucid. She seeks the help of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Mel, and the two of them join forces against . . . well, that’s the rest of the story. Often hilarious, picturing Rose in her unusual and amazing antics for a 68-year-old, this story still demonstrates the vulnerability of the elderly, especially where wealth and family are concerned. The glue that holds this story together is the wonderful relationship between Rose and Mel. Though technically only related by Rose’s marriage to Mel’s grandfather, they are kindred spirits. Great characters, excellent writing, and an intriguing and entertaining plot make this a wonderful story. ( )

How does she convince anyone that she's not actually demented?

Her relatives were the ones to commit her, all the legal papers were drawn up, the authorities are on the side of the nursing home, and even she isn't sure she sounds completely sane.

Thank you Goodreads and Minotaur Books for a chance to read What Rose Forgot!

What Rose forgot was a wonderful standalone novel with action, suspense and a little bit humor in the mix. This was the first novel I have read from Nevada Barr. I have heard some good things about her other books as well. So, I'll be looking into reading some more of Nevada Barr. I was surprised how fast this book took hold of me. The next thing I knew I was finished with the whole book. So, if you are looking for a book with some mystery and a little bit of laughs along the way this book is definitely for you. Happy reading everyone!! ( )
