Fantastic Asians and Where to Find Them

The crown prince of Tomoda is returning from captivity to ascend the throne, but multiple factions are interested in intercepting him before he reaches the capital. Thus goes Steel Crow Saga, with loads of banter and parallels to imperialism in Asian history (Sanbu::Philippines, Shang::China, Dahal::India, Jeongson::Korea, Tomoda:: Japan and with all the culture & baggage from those relationships). The elevator pitch is Pokemon meets Avatar: the Last Airbender, which maybe works in describing the world building kinda (Asian inspired world and magical animal partners bound to a person), but the scope isn't quite so wide as either comparison (just remembered the elite metal police use cables like in Korra). There's a fair amount of influence fun Fullmetal Alchemist, too. I love the characters and while Krueger has indicated this is a standalone, I'd love to revisit the world in the future! ( )

On the positive side, the plot moves along, makes sense, and comes to a reasonable conclusion in a single book. On the negative side, it's mostly very derivative - anime, pokemon, stereotypes of Asian countries, with a bit of Mistborn throw in. It also has the simplicity of a young adult book, though the characters are mostly around 20, and there are mentions of sex. ( )

An incredible ride from start to finish with asian inspired diverse characters who actually go through noticeable character development (kudos to the author), solid storyline, unique setting, and endless amount action. Thus far a stand out amongst other debuts of 2019 and would recommended to just about everyone since this fantasy novel has a bit of everything has for them and their mother. Sure every good novel has it flaws and “Steel Crow Saga” was no exception. Let's talk about the length of the novel. Holy shit. Over 500 pages which could have easily been around the 300 ish if it weren’t for the very descriptive scenes that were unnecessary to add to the overall storyline. I was barely able to see the light at the end of this very long (and possibly endless) read and lesbehonest I lost my focus more times than I can count. Nevertheless, the world building, magical realism of “Steel Crow Sage” is a knock out and I would recommended this to everyone, including their baby mama.

Wow this was a slog.

Characters:

  • •Tala: She was great! Her motivations were more than one-dimensional!

  • •Jimuro: He was fine. No real complaints.

  • •Xiulian: They weren't even Junji Ito's placenta mushrooms. Grow up.

  • •Lee: I hated her. She had absolutely no depth. I loathed her.

In all, if you aren't already sold on YA fantasy as a genre, this is not the book that will convince you otherwise. It was a cool establishing idea, with a mediocre execution.

Plot summary.
Politics. Adventure. Asian inspired. Lgbt. Pokemon.

4.5
I have seen this being compared to as Pokemon meets Avatar and yep that's it, that's the book. I kid, but honestly, the uniqueness and individuality of the characters are on par with Joss Whedon's Buffy and Firefly. Every single main character had a distinctive personality which I commend Paul Krueger to be able to do. I have read many fantasy novels this year and it has been incredibly rare for characters to have such a distinct voice.
Plot-wise it was a bit meh, I wasn't really too fussed with what they were trying to accomplish. I was just thoroughly enjoying the journey and the banter along the way. Give me banter and amazing characters over plot any day. I could literally read Lee and Xiulan going shopping for the entirety of a book and still be entertained.
...That was a long walk to this was amazing.

This was an incredible, unique, character-driven story with a cute f/f relationship and I urge you to read it if you love well-written characters. ( )
