It centres around Tree, a young man due to leave his native Santa Maria (a fictionalised Bahamas) to study in the US, for which he needs a government scholarship. Ian G. Strachan uses Tree's predicament to explore the changing attitudes of Bahamaians in the years following independence. The novel is set around an election, and the problems of democracies in nations where corruption is the norm is an important theme. He has some interesting female characters (notably Tree's mother), as well as exploring how a nation which doesn't really know its roots finds its identity. I found it a fascinating read and would thoroughly recommend it. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

This coming-of-age novel, by the Bahamanian writer, traces the lives of Tree Bodies and his three brothers as they grow up in the streets of Pompey Village, an area of extreme poverty hidden from the tourists who populate the luxury hotels. Creole conversation lends a distinct flavour. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
