Indian textile designs express dazzling inventiveness and creativity, from the woven silks of royalty to the simple block-printed patterns. This authoritative sourcebook overflows with colour and patterns to inspire and inform. The introduction gives an overview of Indian textiles, including methods by which they were made and their intended uses. The book is divided into three chapters defined by pattern style: Florals, Figurative and Geometric. Each comprises an introduction to the style's history, and demonstrates the techniques of structure, surface and embellishment patterning. A wealth of cross-referencing by theme and process makes this a uniquely useful resource. Over 300 breathtaking and hugely varied designs are examined here in detail through close-up shots of the pattern and material alongside a thoughtful examination of the reverse of many fabrics, demonstrating different weaving techniques so that the reader can see precisely how the textile was made.… (más)

Textiles of India por Helmut F. Neumann (MarthaJeanne)
MarthaJeanne: Both big books with good photography of Indian textiles. One is a museum collection, the other a private collection. Both are beautiful.

The illustrations really make this book. Such a wide selection of textiles, many with details and the backs! It's really overwhelming. With examples from early exports preserved in Egypt to 20th century designs, you can see the development as different export markets were aimed at. The author is curator at the V&A, so has access to their amazing archives. The stars are the fabrics, but these are supplemented by various artworks depicting clothing to give a deeper historical background.

The texts aren't any less interesting. They give a large amount of background information from basic materials to techniques to historical information.

Note: I first borrowed the German translation from the library, but within a few pages had ordered the original. ( )
