I need to remember when I read this that the anecdote about [a:Eric Carle|3362|Eric Carle|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1622147696p2/3362.jpg] arguing with his publisher over [b:The Very Hungry Caterpillar|4948|The Very Hungry Caterpillar|Eric Carle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1603739265l/4948._SX50_.jpg|3144982] is not accurate and was taken from a parody "interview."
This book and I did not get off to a good start. For Heaven's sake, a book about children's picture books containing seven grey and grainy illustrations printed straight onto the page, made worst by being printed on paper soon to be described in second-hand booksellers' catalogues as "cheap quality paper, tanned as usual". ... In truth, Fierce Bad Rabbits is not really the book a student of children's illustration would want it to be. It is more of a memoir of the author's childhood (fair enough; the love of illustration starts from there) and her happy relationship with her father. It purports to be a history of picture books, but there are far, far too many gaps. Admittedly one cannot expect this author (born in 1978) to have tasted all of these fruits, but no Arthur Rackham, no Edward Dulac, no Kathleen Hale, no L. Leslie Brooke, no Posy Simmonds, no Norman Lindsay (The Magic Pudding) only a passing reference to Quentin Blake, no Kes Gray and Jim Field (their Oi Frog!/Oi Cat! etc., possibly too late for inclusion)? - oh, what joys Ms Pollard has yet to discover, with or without her children.
What is The Tiger Who Came to Tea really about? How is Meg and Mog related to Polish embroidery? And why does death in picture books involve being eaten? Fierce Bad Rabbits explores the stories behind our favourite picture books, weaving in tales of Clare Pollard's childhood reading and her re-discovery of the classic tales as a parent. Because the best picture books are far more complex than they seem - and darker too. Monsters can gobble up children and go unnoticed, power is not always used wisely, and the wild things are closer than you think. 'A gem . . . hard to put down. Thoroughly enjoyable' Spectator 'Essential reading for every thinking parent' Penelope Lively 'An enlightening, perceptive analysis of the books that build us' Sunday Telegraph, 5 star review 'A happy way to reconnect with old friends' Times No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
