I read the first book in the series, New York Dead, when I was 16 -- a whopping 22 years ago! -- and I still remember it fondly. Having recently noticed that the 44th Stone Barrington book is on the New York Times bestseller list, I thought I'd pick up the second and see what the fuss is all about. While I didn't think the writing was top notch, and I had some pretty serious issues with both the plot and the characterization, the novel was immensely... readable. It was fun, pure and simple.

Stone might as well be James Bond lite -- smooth, good looking, able to bed any woman he comes across. He's smart, rich, suave, and has impeccable taste in everything from clothes to those aforementioned women. While this book (or the series, I imagine) won't win any literary awards, it's a fun ride, and I was more than happy to keep turning pages late into the night to see how the story would end. I will be continuing with the series, because I'm curious to see what kind of trouble Stone will get himself into next. ( )

I started this series a bit out of order. I’m glad I did. If I had read this one before some of the later books, I would have dumped it because of Arrington. She’s a thoroughly unlikeable character due to her narcissistic and self-centered personality. Stone may be a ‘ho with how he falls into bed with anything female, but he’s still at least interested in doing the right thing and helping people.

Rant over.

This had a nicely convoluted plot with nasty villains, scarred by life, and bad guys that get what they deserve. It was a decent thriller/mystery that held my interest without being too stereotyped. ( )

Stone Barrington is hired to find out who is trying to ruin a gossip columnist and her publisher. The book has a frenetic pace, and after being dumped by his judge girlfriend, Stone takes up with a girl named Arrington, who he has to rescue from the blackmailer(s). ( )

A steely gossip columnist gets her comeuppance in this suspenseful novel.

I had never read anything by Stuart Woods before; I didn’t think the works of the prolific author of thrillers would be my cup of tea. I tried this one on a dare of sorts, and I must say, it was at least readable, despite its characters’ conspicuous consumption, casual misogyny, and homophobia. I don’t think I will be continuing the series, however. ( )

Dinner had been wonderful - twelve around a gleaming oval table of burled walnut in a dinning room a dozen stories above the light-flecked carpet of Central Park, the cooking by the chef of a famous restaurant a few blocks away, the wines from the host's superb cellar, and company carefully chosen by a couple who could cast a wide net.
