Special Agent Patrick Collins has been reassigned by the Supernatural Operations Agency to New York City. Navigating his new relationship with Jonothon de Vere, the werewolf he’s now soulbound to, is nothing compared to dealing with territorial disputes between the vampires and werecreatures who call the five boroughs home. But the delicate treaties that have kept the preternatural world in check are fraying at the edges, and the fallout is spilling into the mundane world. Manhattan’s club scene is overrun with the vampire drug known as shine and the subways have become a dumping ground for bodies. When the dead are revealed as missing werecreatures, Patrick and Jono find themselves entangled in pack politics twisted by vampire machinations. Learning to trust each other comes with problems for both of them, and the gods with a stake in Patrick’s soul debt aren’t finished with him yet. Bound by promises they can’t break, Patrick and Jono must find a way to survive a threat that takes no prisoners and is stalking them relentlessly through the city streets. Old and new betrayals are coming home to roost but the truth—buried in blood—is more poisonous than the lies being spun. Trying to outrun death is a nightmare—one Patrick may never wake up from. This series is excellent. The plots are clever and allow magic, gods, and paranormal to exist easily within their pages.
The relationship between Patrick and Jono often seems to take second place to the action but it has a depth and connection that is growing every day and (even though they haven't said it yet) their love for each other is obvious.
Love the addition of Wade to the secondary characters.
There's a nod to the next book towards the end of this one. And I hope that Jono finally issues that challenge. The NY god pack need putting down!

NB: I listened to the audio. The narration is excellent. The narrator adds another layer to this story. And as a Brit I'm in no way offended by Jono's London accent. (This is not the case with most non-Brits trying a British accent). ( )

After the first book, I complained that Jono was not particularly embedded in the story. I mean, he did have a purpose other than being the love interest. But he was not present that much, he was more of a spectator.

In book 2 I got my wish. We got more chapters from his POV, way more... aaand he even got his forgotten accent back. Yay for that. :) He got a more important role in this whole debacle... My problem with that role however is that it felt exactly like that... a role. I didn't feel like Jono wanted to be the alpha of all alphas. He does not agree with the current leaders and knows they need to be replaced, but I don't think he wants to be the one to replace them, however, since there isn't anybody else, and the gods and fates did lure him in the city for a reason... it will be his job... eventually. But I don't really get a strong leader vibe from him at all. He would be content to just be there right beside Patrick, as his partner. It felt completely fake when he acted like the big bad wolf. So I'm not sure what direction the story will take... but this problem needs to be solved.

I really liked that we got to see Patrick in a vulnerable state. Sure he saved the day at the end, but there was one moment when he needed someone else to be strong and take over for a little while. Heroes need rest sometimes. I like his connection to Jono, though I feel like his feelings towards Jono are a bit stronger. Not that Jono's acts proves different....ugh. To be completely honest, I think Jono's character ended up being flat. Sure he has good traits, but I just don't feel any kind of connection to him. I'm neutral about him. If he'd die, the only reason I would be sad, because I don't want Patrick to suffer. But Jesus, even Casale (human chief of police) has a more distinguishable personality than Jono.

The storyline of book 1 was stronger, only because Patrick had personal involvement there. Here it was more about the war between vampires and werecreatures and their territory, add some Aztec Gods with stupid-sounding names to the mix and you get a clusterfuck.

Old characters are back and some new ones. I can't wait for you guys to meet Wade. So adorable. :)

Overall... other than Jono himself, I didn't really have a problem with this book. And like I said I was neutral towards him. I did enjoy the plot of book 1 more. And Jono got an upgrade, compared to book 1, so it looks promising. I'm still really enjoying this series. I'm also hoping we get to see Pat operate with his old team. I'm curious. And I desperately want to see a fully functioning dragon in action. :D

I really liked the first book of the series, but this series is getting better! There is so much written in these pages to keep track of, but Patrick and Jono are such amazing characters. The world created is brilliant, the action is out of this world, and every character is delightfully written. The secondary characters are just as wonderful as the main ones. The tale that was woven is just brilliant. I love seeing Patrick and Jono really come together. It is great to see Patrick really start to trust someone and function as a true partner, even with all of his fear. I really ended up hating the characters I was supposed to hate, loved those I was supposed to love, and appreciated those who I wasn't really sure of because you want to hate them, but they help Patrick.

I listened to the audiobook of this, and it was wonderful. The only thing I did find is that I want to get the ebook as well. There is so much detail that sometimes I found myself wanting to go back and refresh what happened because it was complex.

This was absolutely fabulous. I can't wait for the next book!
