This book is about a girl named Tui and begins with a scene where kids are laughing at her at school. The reasons for the laughter and the emotions it causes Tui to have become clear later in the book. She and her moms use their imaginations and talking it out to resolve these emotions as a family. Endearing, sweet illustrations help convey the emotions throughout. ( ) I am marking this under "diversity" due to an element of the book--the main character has two moms. Not a huge deal is made of it, but I can't help but note it. Especially as it is in Asian culture which, I feel like, is very rare. This isn't my favorite offering from Bao Phi but I appreciate the message: finding one's inner strength to meet challenges and its bullies. Mentioned in a blog post at https://booksbeyondbinaries.blog/2019/12/23/2019-in-review/ Asian-Americans, Minnesota, bullies, self-worth-issues, self-identity, snow-season, imaginative, LGBTQIA, family-dynamics, family, Vietnamese, two-moms, love, myths-legends, multicultural***** Thuy is frustrated by the nasties at school and imagines herself to be various invincible animals as she walks home in the snow making her footprints resemble those of the creatures she becomes. In her case she is mocked for not being Nordic and having two moms, but meanies will pick on any characteristic at all. When she gets home her moms remind her of other, more fantastical beasts to pretend to be. And most of all that she is loved. Basia Tran fills the pages with simple, colorful illustrations which add more meaning to this book. The ending says it all. I loved it! sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
