The stories and poetry in this volume were written by authors between the ages of 11 and 13 and selected for publication in Stone Soupmagazine. Since its beginning in 1973, Stone Souphas published art, poetry, and short fiction springing from the imaginations of young writers and artists. For the under-14s, family--or the lack of it--is not only at the center of their world; for the most part, family istheir world. In this collection, we encounter all sorts of families: happy families, broken families, extended families, bereaved families, and the non-related families we choose for ourselves. In these tales of summer vacations, sibling relationships, family traditions, moving house or moving country, births, deaths, and "normal" everyday life, these young authors expose a myriad of emotions that we experience along with their characters: joy, anger, jealousy, confusion, unhappiness, amusement--and, above everything, love. The stories represent a quest for, and movement towards, deeper understanding of these various aspects of family life. Be prepared for a read that takes you through the fun of silly games with siblings, the sorrows of bereavement and divorce, the pleasures of bonding with grandparents and carers, and the longing for absent parents-all in the context of some truly creative storytelling. It's a richly challenging experience.… (más)

My eight and ten year old children devoured this book of stories written by children. I confess that I did not read it, but they give thumbs up to this collection of stories about all different kinds of families experiencing a variety of situations.

A book of easy to read short stories by young authors about various family situations. To a child, family is their world. I found myself moved by many of these stories and enjoyed reading this book which I received through Early Reviewers.

This is an impressive collection of stories written by children aged between 10-13 years and originally published in “Stone Soup Magazine”. The theme of the collection is family and I loved not only the heartfelt creativity these young people brought to their writing, but the fact that under this “umbrella” a whole range of families, and family situations, is included. There are happy families, broken families, extended families, bereaved families, blended families, adoptive families, to name just some! Within these families there are stories about good times, difficult times, holidays, sibling relationships, relationships with parents, grandparents, carers, dealing with illness and death, bereavement, moving to a new home, emigration, friendships etc. The children express a whole range of emotions as they tell their stories and try to make sense of the world they inhabit – they share their joy, their anger, their jealousy, their confusion, their unhappiness, their capacity for love etc. I felt very impressed by the maturity of the insights they brought to all their reflections and, by the time I read the final story, I was left with a feeling that the future of the written word is in good hands!

I won a copy of this book via a LibraryThing Giveaway. ( )

I've never read anything quite like this book. It's cute and fun. It's also informative. Overall, an average read. ( )

This is a collection of short stories written by 10-13 year olds. Sadly, and I hate to say this, I was not at all impressed.

There were no stories that reached out and grabbed me, or made me think, "wow, that's really well written" Or something with a genuinely deep expression for a young kid. Some of the stories were trying way too hard to be overly philosophical and deep, and it made them more cringeworthy than they already were.

Some of the stories, I'm sad to say, I just skipped over because they were so boring. And while these covered an interesting range of topics, like moving, divorce, death, and even a story featuring a birth, they were less diverse in other ways, which was a bit disappointing.

A solid effort, but it missed the mark with me.

*Please note I won a copy of this via the Early Reviewers program. ( )
