Roman emperor Domitian throws a terrifying banquet for the Senatorsâ??one that everyone is certain they won't surviveâ??in Lindsey Davis's Invitation to Die: A Novella of Ancient Rome.
The emperor Domitian is paranoid, autocratic, and violent. And he has a special grudge against both the Senate and the Camilli. But they dare not refuse an invitation from mercurial and vengeful Domitian. And their concerns were well foundedâ??Domitian has gathered the most powerful men in Rome for what is known to history as The Black Banquet. The place markers are tombstones with names on it, the servers are slaves covered in black make-up, and Domitian speaks only of death. Aulus and Quintusâ??like all the attendeesâ??are sure they will not survive the night.

Invitation to more?

This is a mood piece, a welcome return to check in on old friends we had come to know and care for during re twenty Falco books. It's nice to see how they are doing, as time passes, and be reminded that life and adventures Wil continue. ( )

A short story, set during the Flavia Albia series, featuring the Camillus brothers. As senators, they are invited to Domitian's infamous Black Dinner. Very much the reaction of the brothers to the invitation and it's aftermath. I thought it a bit weak, not on the same level as Vesuvius by Night.
