Cass is a 22nd century university student who - like most young adults - has always believed her parents were a bit stuck in the past. But on her eighteenth birthday she learns exactly how true this is: not only are her parents time travelers, living in an era different than either was born in, but now, to ensure that history plays out as it's supposed to, she must travel to the year 1914 to live out her adult life. Cass isn't the type, though, to just sit back and watch while all the tragic events she's learned about in her history courses play out in front of her. Not when she's the only one in the world with the foreknowledge - and determination - to change it.… (más)

I didn't really like Cassandra so that dimmed my enjoyment of the story. I also didn't understand why her parents didn't give her some kind of heads up about where her eventual life was going to lead. I sort of understood it, but not really. She was very headstrong and completely without common sense. ( )

A fun romp, with some new twist, through an old ides- what if you went back in time and tried to "fix things". I loved it! ( )

I received a gratis copy of this novella from the publisher.

I've greatly enjoyed Nikel's fun time travel novella series, which in the past I've described as along the lines of old favorite shows like Sliders and Quantum Leap. This volume brings a new development to the time-twisted family saga: Cass has grown up in the future, forced by her parents into a relentless study of history. Only on her 18th birthday is she delivered the harsh truth that they've been trying to prepare her for her future--which is in the past. In 1914, to be precise. Her parents and brother know from historical records that Cass lives out her life in the 20th century. They can't cause a paradox. To the past, Cass must go.

Now, I'm a big-time history geek and I've been studying a lot about the 1910s and '20s. This book truly hit my historical sweet spot. Cass's brother Dodge sets her up in the past with a job as a Harvey Girl--something I've often read about, as an Arizona resident, but never before encountered in an SFF book.

The one downside for me is that, well, I kinda wanted to shake sense into Cass for a good chunk of the book. She's so intent on going back to the past to do good that she's outright foolish. That did take away some of my enjoyment in the book in contrast to the other volumes. However, it's still worth it to keep reading, because Cass grows up the hard way--and you need to know what happens so you can continue on to the 4th and final novella in the series! ( )

The 3rd book in the "Place In Time" series. These were very enjoyable time-travel stories. Light, easy, humor-filled reading. Even though it's the 3rd book, it can be read without reading the previous ones, but I would recommend reading all 3 in order.

I have received all three of these fun time travel novellas from Library Thing early reviewers. I have enjoyed all three. They are quick, fun, and the plot is the strong part of this book.

In The Cassandra Complex, the characters we first met in the first book continue their lives but with a time travel twist. Cassandra has to go back to her "own time." I liked that she did not have to loose complete contact with her family, but had her brother there to watch out for her. Like most young people Cassandra thinks she can change the world... a spoiled young adult who won't listen to good advice.

Thankfully, Cass grows up during the story, is saved from disaster and lives out her life in peace. I enjoyed the creative time travel complexities of the stories, but this book had some drama I'm not fond of. Young adult angst is hard to do well without annoying your readers.

That being said, if there ends up being more of these books I would probably read them. They are a nice change.

I received this book from Library Thing Early Reviewers and was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own. ( )
