Fiction. Western. Thriller. Historical Fiction. HTML:Johnstone Justice. Making the West wild again.

Keeping the peace in a West Texas town like Buffalo Peak should be easy for a legendary frontiersman like Marshal Elwood "Firestick" McQueen. He's got his longtime buddies "Beartooth" Skinner and "Moosejaw" Hendricks as his deputies??not to mention the famous rifle that earned him his nickname. But when Firestick learns that their ornery old friend "Rip" Ripley just rode into town, all bets are off. It's darn near impossible to keep the peace when Rip's specialty is disturbing it. Firestick finds a decade-old wanted poster for Rip??the reward is one dollar.

Firestick uses it to toss Rip into the clink till he decides to leave town. But Ripley's still up to his old tricks??he has a new gang of cutthroats coming to Buffalo Peak to steal a king's ransom in gold in the town bank. Firestick, Beartooth, and Moosejaw become pawns in what just might be the heist of the century. Because Rip's kill-crazy pals will have to bust him out of jail first . . .

Title: Dead for a Dollar (A Firestick Western #3)
Author: William W. Johnstone & J. A. Johnstone
Pages: 352
Year: 2021
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
In the third book in the Firestick Western series, readers once again get to enjoy the close camaraderie of three former mountain men now Buffalo Peaks lawmen. The marshal is Elwood “Firestick” McQueen, and his deputies are Malachi “Beartooth” Skinner and Jim “Moosejaw” Hendricks. Each of these men have seen each other through tough times, and they have also found romance too. Together these men run a horse ranch called the Double M, which they hope grows into a competitive business.
When an old friend, Ripley “Rip” Cuthbert, saves their bacon while the three are on the hunt for a rogue grizzly, they believe seeing their old friend is cause for a celebration. However, once all of them return to town, it doesn’t quite seem like old times.
Firestick is stunned to learn that Beartooth has a dodger on him accusing him of murder. Rip ends up in the hoosegow more than once, and Beartooth must remain inside the house on their ranch until Firestick can track down how the dodger. Moosejaw is tense because he must keep his old friend locked up while his pards are doing what needs to be done.
All the time though there is an undercurrent of something nefarious. While Rip claims he can’t seem to become part of town life, his actions speak different. Plus, there seems to be a gang of men slowly coming into town. Why? They hope to take a load of gold from the chuckwagon’s false bottom that is with a herd of horses coming from the south.
Join the three amigos as they race to save lives and the town from the hell that comes on the heels of dodgers and old friends. I recommend reading the books of the series in order starting with Firestick and Blood and Bullets. Each book gives more insight into the three old mountain men and their lady friends. Plus, each book has western action, adventure and danger that keeps audiences turning pages while burning the midnight oil to finish!
