Jon and Claire work together with people who are in wheelchairs. They seem Like the perfect couple devoted to each other, but lately Claire has been having flashbacks from her childhood. The memories include her sister, whom she hasn't seen in over 20 years.
Claire doesn't feel she can talk to Jon without worrying him. She turns to another man, Randy. Claire works with Randy and eventually with Jon's help finds out what happened to her and her sister as children. ( )

Claire Harte-Mathias and her husband Jon are driving home in a snowstorm when they encounter a woman about to jump off a bridge. Claire leaves the car to try to help the woman; Jon cannot because he uses a wheelchair. Following this encounter, Claire begins to have flashes of memories she may have been suppressing. Meanwhile, across the country, Dr. Vanessa Gray is trying to obtain funding for a program for adolescents who were abused as children, while struggling with the ramifications of her own childhood abuse.
Although the revelations Claire is about to confront may seem pretty obvious to the careful reader, her own experience in remembering is very organic, and is only slightly spoiled by those around her who know what she has repressed. Also very realistic and genuine is the tumult her marriage goes through as she finds her husband unable to help her with this journey and instead turns to the brother of the woman she met on the bridge that night. Jon's disability is also a major factor in the story, as the couple run a foundation that funds programs for people with spinal cord injuries and counsels them and their loved ones on how to deal with these injuries.
This is nominally fiction, marketed as a beach read, but those who work in the helping fields will probably find it most engaging. ( )
