F/SF Appearing in 1973/74 the first two volumes for this anthology series feature Sword & Sorcery tales commissioned especially for these volumes by Lin Carter. The eight stories are by the (then) members of SAGA, The Swordsmen And Sorcerers Guild Of America. The stories are of varying quality pretty much as good as you'd expect from the eight writers. Volume Two contains: The Rug And The Bull by L. Sprague de Camp Curator of the Robert E. Howard legacy for a time de camp had a meticulous methodical style which sometimes strikes me a somewhat bloodless compared to the more dashing work of Howard or Burroughs (or indeed de Camp's sometime collaborator Lin carter himself. This is a witty and imaginative tale which manages to combine a flying carpet and bullfighting. 8/10 The Jade Man's Eyes by Michael Moorcock A new tale of Elric this one is characteristically dark and fatalistic as are all Elric tales. While Carter certainly had a tin ear for coining fantasy names here Moorcock (SAGA's Brithish member) takes on all comers with his own unpronounceable efforts - J'osui C'reln, Reyr and R'lin B'ren A'a. Not a bad story but Moorcock is hardly stretching out of his normal S&S parameters here. 7/10 Toads Of Grimmerdale by Andre Norton SAGA's (then) only female member offers a new tale of Witch World that is a highlight of the Flashing Swords series. A tale of vengeance the plot twist is telegraphed well in advance but the story is richly written and all credit to Carter for specifically requesting that Norton return to the Witch World for her contribution. 9/10 Ghoul's Garden by John Jakes As with Volume One this volume ends with the weakest contribution. Like Carter, John Jakes' S&S work is workmanlike at best and while the plot is interesting his character development is weak as ever. His barbarian hero Brak is not even a clone of Conan more like a cardboard cutout of Conan. Carter's own Conan copy Thongor is better which say a lot. 6/10 sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
