"Five New Yorkers must come together in order to save their city from destruction in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin. Every great city has a soul. Some are ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York? She's got six. When a young man crosses the bridge into New York City, something changes. He doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can feel the pulse of the city, can see its history, can access its magic. And he's not the only one. All across the boroughs, strange things are happening. Something is threatening to destroy the city and her six newborn avatars unless they can come together and stop it once and for all"--… (más)

This book is awesome! The premise from the original short story explodes into an exciting novel with a bunch more characters. I loved the diverse cast and the strong grounding in New York City. The ending was unexpected and worked really well. I look forward to seeing where this series goes next! ( )

Given my absolute obsession with the Broken Earth Trilogy and the undying respect I have for Jemisin, I was so hyped to read this. Unfortunately, this was quite disappointing.

This book is the classic Jemisin mix of sci-fi/fantasy over a timely socio-political commentary scaffolding. It is above all a love letter to New York, one that really underscores the idea that the city's biggest existential threat is white supremacy.

While I loved the premise of borough/city avatars that celebrated the diversity of NY, it felt like the diversity was shoehorned in and contrived as if "going down an inclusion checklist" (almost to the point of leaning into some stereotypes??). Every author would be better with even an ounce of Jemisin's dedication to write underrepresented experiences, but the lack of subtlety in her allegories here was made all the more cartoonish and force-fed bc it's set in a real city that we know rather than a fantasy world.

I couldn't bring myself to rate this any lower bc it's Jemisin but it has many flaws. ( )

Already calling this as the best book I'll read this year. It was incredible as an audiobook. ( )

I've never read any of Jemisin's work but I really really enjoyed this so I guess I better get to it. I found this super engaging. It was so fun to read, and I loved the cast of very different characters and the ways they butted heads! Lead to some goooood drama (and also me being supremely frustrated). If there was a second book out right now I'd pick it up and read it immediately, but alas, I'll have to wait. Big recommend if you want something pulpy and fun but also socially relevant. ( )

The first chapter has one of the most inventive fight scenes I've had the pleasure of reading. The rest of the book is great too. ( )

I sing the city.

Fucking city. I stand on the rooftop of a building I don't live in and spread my arms and tighten my middle and yell nonsense ululations at the construction site that blocks my view. I'm really singing to the cityscape beyond. The city'll figure it out.
