"Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn't belong. Not with his mother's new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father's wife. Not at school, where he's an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he's tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who's introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez? Mildred Gutermann, a German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, a deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two. Despondent at the loss of Luis, Mildred isolates herself further from a neighborhood devolving into bigotry and fear. Determined not to let her give up, Raymond helps her see that for every terrible act the world delivers, there is a mirror image of deep kindness, and Mildred helps Raymond see that there's hope if you have someone to hold on to."--Provided by publisher.… (más)

The world would be a better place with more young people like the protagonist of this novel. I could not understand why this sweet and intelligent young man was pushed aside by both of his divorced parents. He does find the love of his chosen family. This book should be read by all high school level students. ( )

I saw this book recommended in many book groups on Facebook and people loved it. I thought it was good, but somewhat unrealistic. I would LOVE to believe that there are good people like Raymond and Mrs. G., and Luis Velez, but sadly, they are few and far between. I struggled to believe that a 17-year old teen would do all the things he did, but perhaps there are some people who would. (Let's hope so!)
I liked the storyline of the trial, and the prosecutor's reaction.
I liked the story - other than the fact that I found the goodness in Raymond an anomaly in this world. I truly hope I am wrong! ( )

This is a nice book about being nice to people in a less than nice world at times. There is a lot of nice people in the story. In real life people actually are too busy to take time for others and do not know about other’s needs. I liked the book and found it entertaining. There are some positive themes and truisms about life. ( )

I keep thinking I don't have favorites, I love all of Hyde's books...but this one? I was in tears, too, along with Raymond. What a perfectly wonderful, lovely story. How, how, how does Hyde come up with these remarkable ways to tell about people living lives but finding out how to care for each other and themselves? There is always a beautiful substance to her characters. Yes, be kind---that needs to be in every human being. ( )

This was a wonderful book about a 17 year old boy who decides to help his blind elderly neighbor when the man who had been helping her disappeared. The reader on this audiobook was amazing in making me feel like I really got to know Raymond and his neighbor, Millie. Highly recommended! ( )
