Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. LGBTQIA+ (Fiction.) HTML:Regal romance abounds in this flirty, laugh-out-loud companion novel to Prince Charming, by New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins.
Millie Quint is devastated when she discovers that her sort-of-best friend/sort-of-girlfriend has been kissing someone else. Heartbroken and ready for a change of pace, Millie decides to apply for scholarships to boarding schools . . . the farther from Houston the better.
Soon, Millie is accepted into one of the world's most exclusive schools, located in the rolling highlands of Scotland. Here, the country is dreamy and green; the school is covered in ivy, and the students think her American-ness is adorable.
The only problem: Mille's roommate Flora is a total princess.
She's also an actual princess. Of Scotland.
At first, the girls can't stand each other, but before Millie knows it, she has another sort-of-best-friend/sort-of-girlfriend. Princess Flora could be a new chapter in her love life, but Millie knows the chances of happily-ever-afters are slim . . . after all, real life isn't a fairy tale . . . or is it?
New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins brings the feels and the laughs to her latest romance.

* I would give this book 3.5 stars for review*

I really loved this book. I thought this book was a fun take on royally themed novel. I also really liked how this book tackled BI characters and just found it to the perfect beach read. I also loved the setting of this read. I ALSO really liked the newspaper articles that was featured in this book and helped expand the world. I really loved the side characters featured in this book and also how this book connected to the characters in the first novel. This book just put a smile on my face and hope for more books in this series in the future. ( )

It’s super cute and sappy…. But the ending felt wrapped up a little too easily? But I appreciate there wasn’t any big fights with MOM about their romance.

I also don’t feel like the scholarship should have been the big conflict…. Like the scholarship was already “paid” for the year so Flora paying for it did nothing but throw money around at something that was basically already covered. I feel like it was just a weak plot filler rather than planned from the very beginning.

That being said this is a YA book so really it’s not that bad? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Whatever my main point is it’s an adorable read and not a tough one… and the kids can definitely use a relatable story that doesn’t encourage them to go on a bender, emotional or otherwise. ( )

I really liked the premise of this book and when I first started reading it I was actually enjoying it. However, as soon as the whole challenge thing happened, I got really annoyed really quickly. Let me take you through why I don't like this book.

I think the biggest problem with this book is that it didn't convince me that Flora and millie (or quint or whatever) were in love or that they even liked each other. Basically what happens is that flora is a complete bitch to everyone, including millie, until millie tells flora that her mother died and then flora feels guilt, and then they "fall in love." But after they "fall in love" or get together or like each other or whatever you want to call it, Flora is still a bitch. She literally does not change. She has no character arc. In the end, the author literally tells us that she stopped doing crazy things and is upset that millie left her. like wtf, I don't believe you. SHOW ME.

Another thing that really pissed me off was the pacing. The author spends more time developing USELESS side characters than creating a character arc for flora. We spend the first few chapters of the book learning about Jude (her crush), darcy (her frenemy), Lee (her BFF), and her aunt, all of whom NEVER SHOW UP AGAIN, except in like 2 fucking text messages. Like I get that Jude is a huge motivation for her to move but this is an instance where you could literally just tell us that instead of wasting 20% of your book on nothing. Or better yet you can have millie and flora discuss why she fucking moved.

I won't write too much more but the ending is by far the worst thing about this book. What ends up happening is that millie gets insecure and then breaks up with flora. then seb (flora's brother) shows up to tell millie that flora is really upset. then millie rushes to some parade to tell flora that she loves her. Don't forget this all happens within the last 30 pages. like I just can't with this ending, it's so lame and generic. But also the reason they broke up is annoying as fuck and then I am not even convinced that flora is actually upset because we don't see her actually be upset. Like how am I supposed to believe that flora actually gives a damn about millie. in the end Flora DOESN't EVEN SAY I LOVE YOU BACK. aaaaaaaaaaaa. this is literally rule #1. just wtf.

I really didn't like this book. i am very disappointed. To me, it feels like the author didn't even try to make this a good book. it's just wasted potential. ( )
