"Poems and Stories shows J.R.R. Tolkien's vast talents as storyteller and critic through an important collection of his shorter works." "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is a collection of delightful songs and verses featuring a number of hobbit legends, from tales of princesses, dwarves and trolls, to stories of Old Oliphaunt and the Man in the Moon." "The dramatic poem The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, unavailable in any other edition, is a moving lament for the death of Beorhtnoth at the Battle of Maldon in the year 991." "Tolkien's essay On Fairy Stories is central to an understanding of his work. In it, he discusses the nature of fairy stories, arguing that they should not be treated as stories written only for children. They are as relevant and universal as any form of fiction." "Two further stories in this collection aptly illustrate his point: Smith of Wootton Major which tells of the preparation of the Great Cake to mark the Feast of Good Children, and the strange events which follow, and Leaf by Niggle, which recounts the strange adventures of the painter, Niggle." "Farmer Giles of Ham is one of Tolkien's most popular stories, full of wit and humour, set in the days when giants and dragons walked the earth. Farmer Giles is fat and unheroic but he is also very shrewd. When a large and stupid giant blunders into his fields, it sets off a surprising chain of events." "Poems and Stories is complemented throughout by Pauline Bayne's delightful illustrations."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved… (más)

I read the whole anthology and was not disappointed. This was my 1st read of all but the last 2 short stories. ( )

Contains the previously-published contents of The Tolkien Reader and Smith of Wooton Major, i.e. all the significant non-Hobbit/LOTR (and non-scholarly) work published during Tolkien''s lifetime. The work is nicely printed and bound, in a slipcase, with additional illustrations by Pauline Baynes to those which had already appeared, and two-colour printing for the illustrations and some headings.

Of major interest: "On Fairy-Stories", originally published in Essays Presented to Charles Williams, which sets out Tolkien''s model of man as subcreator and makes an apology for the fantastic in literature.

Smith of Wooton Major: this can be viewed as an allegory but is mainly a version of the old motif of the mortal who goes under hill. (Thomas Rhymer, etc.)

Of more minor interest: the poems, which are occasional poems connected by a later casting as coming from the Shire; "Leaf by Niggle", which really is an allegory, about Purgatory; "The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son" which is of particular interest if one knows The Battle of Maldon and acts as a declaration of Tolkien''s views on "the northern theory of heroism". "Farmer Giles of Ham" is a rather older tall tale set in the mythical Britain of Geoffrey of Monmouth, inspired mainly as a philologist's joke.

These have been variously mixed and remixed since the date of publication. This particular edition may be preferred because it presents the the works with (largely) the art and presentation which Tolkien had approved when still alive. ( )
