When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here. It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender--but not at a bar. At a guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right? Then my favorite guild members--three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages--asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding. So that's what we did. And that's why I'm here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago. Why did I agree to this again?… (más)

Another Great Adventure Mystery in this Urban Fantasy Series.

Annette Marie is still a relatively new-to-me author, this is only the second book of hers I've read. I was a bit weary starting this urban fantasy series, as she is a well respected YA author and I usually avoid YA like the plague, but I've quickly become engrossed into this world of Mythics, danger and secrecy.

I like Annette's writing style and I found this story as easy to read as the previous one. The prose and pace used was good; the tale never felt rushed or overly convoluted and thankfully came without any information dumps or slumps.

Once again, I downloaded the ebook for free using my Kindle Unlimited subscription and added the narration. This series has been my introduction to Cris Dukehart and again I was impressed with her performance; loving the pace at which she read the story and her slight tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I think Cris has definitely captured Tori's character and the feel of the story brilliantly in her narration.

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri had all the aspects that I look for in a great story: intelligent writing style that’s easy to read, main characters with depth of personality that feels real, a wealth of quality in the supporting cast, believable background story and setting (despite the fantasy genre) and a good balance between different scenes meaning that I got to experience lots of different emotions while reading this story. I also loved the fact that the mystery and conflict was satisfactorily concluded by the end of the book while still leaving me keen to find out what Tori would get caught up with next.

I would recommend this book to fans of mystery stories who enjoy adventure within an urban fantasy setting and don’t mind a bit of bloody action and a sprinkling of romance thrown in. ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the second book in the Guild Codex: Spellbound series. I borrowed this through Kindle Unlimited. There are going to be seven books total in this series. There is also a sister series to this called Guild Codex: Demonized that weaves in and out of the Spellbound timeline but features different characters. Previous to reading this I have read and enjoyed all of Annette Marie’s other series.

Story (5/5): I loved this book even more than the first one. In this book Tori is asked by her three favorite mages to serve as bait to lure out a dangerous rogue mage. What follows is a crazy adventure that Tori could have never imagined or predicted. And yes, there are dragons.

Characters (5/5): I absolutely love Tori, she is a normal girl in a crazy situation and really only has her hot temper, sometimes bad attitude, and occasional magical gadgets to get her through things. I love the three bad-ass mages she has befriended. The addition of some new rogue mages (and one super hot murderous rogue mage in particular) really added a lot to the series. Then there were the dragons!!! Tons of amazing characters in this series.

Setting (5/5): Much of this story takes place in a completely new setting which I won’t talk about because of spoilers. While I continue to enjoy the crazy atmosphere at the pub, I really enjoyed this new setting as well. I love that we got to meet so many new types of fae creatures.

Writing Style (5/5): I love Marie’s writing style, it's fast-paced, easy to read, and contains a lot of humor too. Marie does an amazing job with characterization and action/fight scenes. I love her creative plot ideas and how the story pulls me in and keeps me reading.

My Summary (5/5): This was an amazing continuation to this series, I absolutely loved it! I love the fast-pace, fun characters, and creative story in this series. It’s so much fun to read and just a perfect light urban fantasy read. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in this series. ( )

Tori Dawson is working as a bartender at the Crow and Hammer. But it’s not just any bar – it’s a guild. For magic users. And she is human. Completely human. Not a lick of magic in her. However, she can earn some money there while her employment paperwork makes it through the red tape that is the MPD before they kick her human non-magical ass out the door. It’s while they are waiting that her three mage buddies decide to ask her to help them with a job. They want to use her as bait for a high value bounty named The Ghost. A little uneasy, but trusting in her magical friends, she agrees. And that’s when things go spectacularly south.

Tori, oh, Tori. The things you get yourself into. Book 1 was entertaining and book 2 does not fail in that aspect. There’s humor, hotness, magic, and danger. Plus, a new character is introduced – The Ghost. He’s quite an interesting guy and totally yummy. I love the story, the characters, and the world. I’m practically breaking my arm patting myself on the back for finding this gem of a series. Highly entertaining and just what I love. Stay tuned for Book 3’s review! Because I completely devoured each book that’s out there. A literary glutton? Who, me? ( )

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri
The Guild Codex: Spellbound Series, Book 2
By: Annette Marie
Narrated by: Cris Dukehart
This has lots of twists and turns. Nothing is as it seems. Great plot. Love the characters. I hope the new character comes up in later books.
Great narration! ( )

It wasn't long ago that Tori Dawson landed a job as a bartender for a guild of mages. So when her three favorite mages ask for Tori's help catching a notorious rogue, of course she agrees. The fact that Tori's going to be used as bait to lure a felon who is a dark arts master known to abduct young, troubled mythics... yeah, that plan fell apart about two minutes in to the operation.

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri is the second in The Guild Codex by Annette Marie. The story continues to be a lot of fun though I found I was missing the guys as Tori went on her own accidental adventure.

Tori is as feisty and smart-mouthed as ever. I love it when she refuses to take shit from anyone, even if it would be better for her to shut up at times. We're given a bit of Tori's history which was nice. We're also introduced to a new antagonist called the Ghost. He's quite an interesting character. His magic is completely different than what we've seen so far, which was a great addition to the world.

In fact I am loving the world that Marie has created in general. We get to learn more about fae and all the various forms they can take. Plus there's a baby dragon. Who doesn't love a story with a baby dragon?

All things considered, I missed the guys enough that I knocked a half star off my rating. I definitely hope there's more Aaron, Kai and Ezra in the next book. ( )
