"The truce between Cinnabar and the Alliance is holding, and the Republic of Cinnabar Navy is able to explore regions of the galaxy without the explorers being swept up in great power conflict. The Far Traveller is probing sponge space to open routes for Cinnabar traders--and for RCN warships if war breaks out again. But besides astrogation, the Far Traveller is to survey and catalog life forms on the worlds it touches. Harry Harper has just been posted to the Traveller. He's an RCN officer by convention, a scientist by training--and a member of one of leading aristocratic families on Cinnabar by birth. Lieutenant Rick Grenville would rather serve on a warship in the heart of battle, but peace and the whim of the Navy Board have put him on an exploration vessel instead. He finds that the dangers on the fringes of civilization are just as great as those from missiles and gunfire that he expected to face. As internal struggles cause the Alliance to relax its iron grip, regional forces are attempting to increase their own power--and they're not fussy about the means they use. Besides the biological answers that officials on Cinnabar expect the Far Traveller to find, the ship's Director of Science, Doctor Veil, has her own agenda: to learn more about the Archaic Spacefarers who roamed the universe tens of thousands of years before humans reached the stars. The crew of the Far Traveller is poised to clear more of the shadows away from the deep past than ever before in human history--if they survive"--… (más)

David Drake dedicates this book to the citizen scientists of the 19th century who traveled the world describing it's wonders. "To Clear Away the Shadows" is a series of vignettes, short stories really, that follow Lieutenant Harry Harper, the junior biologist aboard the scouting ship "Far Traveller" or "Fart" as it is known to the crew. Lt. Harper has a dual role on board, and it is hard to decide which is more important. He is a biologist, yes, whose job it is to help Doctor Margot Veil catalog and describe the exotic flora and fauna of the newly charted worlds the Fart visits. But his second role, one that he qualified for at birth, is to wow the rubes along the route as Lord Harper, son of the Harper of Greenslade, and a Gentleman. It seems that biological science doesn't open up as many doors as does noble birth.

We follow Harry, his friend the jaunty Lt. Rick, Kent the driver, and Joss the hunter, on a series of adventure as the Fart moves from planet to planet.

Each vignette is named for a planet and some of the stories are better than others. They are all a bit too short to be fully satisfying, but then Charles Darwin's diaries are a bit choppy too. Zemlyn's World is the weakest, I think. Elkin is the most disturbing and I am not sure I agree with the conclusion Mr. Drake offers us. Could it have been an experiment or even a kind of deliberate, preemptive, elimination of future competition instead. Read the story and see what you think.

This book does not sparkle but if you like David Drake, you will like it.

The Cinnabar/RCN series is getting away from Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy; they don't appear at all in this installment.

Now that the war with the Alliance is ended, Cinnabar is sending out exploration and science vessals. Lieutenant Lord Harry Harper is a newly qualified biologist who has joined the Far Traveller as aide to its resident scientist. Lt Rafe Grenville befriends him and helps him find his place aboard ship. They have a variety of adventures, including hostile wildlife, civil unrest, kidnappings, and rescue work.

Appealing characters and some excitement, but no real military action. ( )
