Did not finish book. Stopped at 50%.
This was my first DNF on the reread of this series. I don't remember how I felt about this book in particular when I read it as a young teen, but as an adult reader it was both boring and annoying. This is where we get an insider look at the big bad Atrox and its Followers. There's an interesting, kind of pervy seduction immortal, hundreds of years old Standon plays on a fourteen year old girl, but aside from that, this evil bunch doesn't seem to do much other than go to clubs and squat at abandoned houses. It's very boring. Halfway through the book, the goddesses show up and I found their attitudes about Stanton's evilness so incredibly immature that it was annoying. Again, a teenager might not find these girls immature, but I did and reading them having these overblown reactions to an immortal being who's been evil for hundreds of years resorting to evil deeds in order to solve problems is so...teenager-y. They all lacked empathy.

When I was a teenager, I stopped reading the series at Book 10, so I'm hoping the next few will be better. After getting through half of this novel, I read the last few chapters of it to get ready for the next one. ( )

It is the turn of Immortal Stanton to lead the story. He is in love with Serena, but has distanced himself from her to save her from further danger from the Atrox and the Regulators. Secretly he knows that the real danger is himself as he knows the Atrox must have taken him for a reason. Maybe he saw the future and saw him giving over Serena to the ultimate evil.

Stanton senses danger on the night of Halloween and is visited by famous Regulator Malcolm who is disintegrating. He has a message for Stanton, but doesn't manage to give it all before passing over. He was an immortal so Stanton is baffled by his death. Stanton is then visited by Cassandra who is now outcast, neither a Follower or a true human. She is still in love with him and will do anything to win him back even telling the Regulators of his secret love for a Daughter. A face from his past has returned and they are trying to overthrown the Atrox and become the ultimate evil. Stanton is torn between Serena and defending himself.

This was an excellent addition to the series. I loved the ending, very sad and sinister, it really left things on the edge of a cliff plot wise and I can't wait to find out what happened to the lost Daughter and if they manage to get her back. ( )

This time, we get to see the viewpoint of one of the bad guys, which is certainly an interesting perspective change. Especially when the bad guy isn’t completely bad. Stanton is a rather complex character and it’s interesting to see into his head for awhile. ( )

Stanton hid in the shadows as trick-or-treating children ran past him, their small feet crunching gravel and stone.
