Too dense for me, but my husband really enjoyed it.

Initially known for her detective novels in the late 30’s - early 40’s, Sayers went on to write plays that rendered religious tones with high praises. Almost the alter-ego of Dorothy Parker, who also wrote the same varied genres, including ad slogans, Sayers had as much the hidden messages/undertones in her writings as Parker did obvious snark.
What I enjoyed most about this was it was a leisure read, given each chapter was its own story, play, essay, what not, with a brief introduction.
The collectives own intro is as informative into the woman behind such forward-thinking writings.
Highlighted are the gospel themes within her many offerings.
Her mystery novels, spanning near a century, were a highly sought read, while also were her religious-themed expostulations. She, unbeknownst to me, was a reveled translator of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
A woman of many surprises and talents, it’s delightful to see her recognized in a tidy tribute, sure to please her fans on both ends of the quill. ( )

"The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers" is the second volume in the series I’ve read (the first was "The Gospel in Gerard Manley Hopkins"). While I knew and loved Hopkins, I was almost wholly ignorant of Sayers’ writing and had read none of the Lord Peter Wimsey novels for which she is best known. "The Gospel in DLS" mixes fiction excerpts with theological essays and addresses in each chapter, connecting them under common themes such as “Unnatural Death” or “Are Women Human?” This organization works to highlight the interconnectedness of Sayers’ thought and is true delight to read, both for her inspirational beliefs and for the wit and insights of her fiction. I look forward to reading more of her works and plan to pick up a Lord Peter Wimsey novel at the earliest opportunity. ( )

I have found Dorothy Sayers to be an insightful theologian when I've run across the occasional essay or letter, and was happy to find a collection such as this. Ms. Sayers demands the reader to revisit long held assumptions and, often as not, leaves the reader with a bit more clarity about God and Creation, and a better grasp of faith for the critical mind.

Kudos to the editor in creating this series of theme-based chapters with excerpts from Sayers plays and novels, followed by her letters and essays. In pulling these resources together in this way, Ms. Vanderhoof has done the most difficult work for the reader wanting to tap into Dorothy Sayers' thinking on Christian faith in the 20th century. It's been years since I've read any of the Lord Peter Wimsey books, and to be honest, I never thought of them in the light of this book's themes. I was just reading a good mystery. However, the broad headings assigned to various readings (Conscience, Despair and Hope, Forgiveness, etc.) made sense to me and it was interesting to get into something of the mindset of Miss Sayers. On the other hand, I was not very interested in the more religious, non-Wimsey excerpts and analysis, and this is as much (or more) me - the audience/reader - as the book itself. I appreciate receiving this Early Reviewer, but find I'd rather just pull out the old paperbacks I so enjoyed and read them again. ( )
