#1 New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner returns with an unpredictable thriller that puts fan favorites D. D. Warren and Flora Dane on a shocking new case that begins with a vicious murder and gets darker from there.A man is dead, shot three times in his home office. Warren arrives on the scene and recognizes the woman--Evie Carter--from a case many years back. Evie's father was killed in a shooting that was ruled an accident. But for D.D., two coincidental murders is too many.Flora Dane sees the murder of Conrad Carter on the TV news and immediately knows his face. Young Evie Carter's life is shattered when she comes home after a day shopping with her mother to find her Harvard math professor father dead from a shotgun blast in the kitchen. Suspecting suicide, the mother convinces the daughter to lie about an accident. Fast forward to present day, Evie comes home to find her husband shot to death in his study looking at something horrific on his computer so she empties the rest of the 9mm into the laptop. D.D. Warren worked the initial case, and is managing the new one. Her CI, Flora Dane, recognizes the dead husband as an acquaintance of her abductor, and he is living under an assumed name. Flora reaches out to her therapist and the FBI's Kimberly Quincy to join the team to solve the crime, battling with D.D.'s worry that Evie will get away with murder again. ( )

ATTENTION MYSTERY WRITERS: STOP HAVING THE VILLAN REVEAL THEIR PLAN TO THE PROTAGONIST AT THE CLIMAX. IT’S CLICHED & UNREALISTIC!!

I had a feeling that this book was part of a continuing series, and my instinct was right. Initially I was apprehensive about needing to have read the previous books first, but this one does a brief catch up of previous plots and character descriptions for the first time reader, which I appreciated.⁣⁣
As a new mom, I sympathized the most with the main protagonist, Evie. She is 5 months pregnant and having overcome a traumatic event in her past, is happy to have started a new life with her husband and unborn child. I enjoyed getting to know more about her and the secrets from her past. The other character I enjoyed the most was Flora, a kidnapping survivor who assists Detective DD Warren (the series subject) on her cases. I didn’t really connect with DD, probably because I haven’t read the previous books in the series. ⁣⁣
There were many things happening in this book and they all seemed to complicate the plot for me. ⁣
Which brings me to the ending. One of my top reader complaints is when the villan reveals their master plan to the protagonist or the law enforcement after them, something happens, and the villain either dies or goes to jail. It totally takes me out of every book, and I just wish it would stop. I understand authors want to conclude the story and not leave things up in the air, but for me, it’s more realistic if the villain doesn’t reveal his plan all at once, or it’s never revealed at all. Especially in this one, where the villain reveals their plan and everyone is talking to each other during a HOUSE FIRE!!! Yes, even the pregnant protagonist! Instead of escaping right away, they all have time to question the villain and listen to their long winded reasoning. There are moments where they try to get out, but it was so laughably bad and reminded me of a made for TV movie. ⁣⁣
Perhaps one day I will try this author again, or pick up one of her earlier works in this series. It seems there are many a Detective DD Warren fan, but this one just wasn’t a good introduction for me ( )

I'm not a hardcore fan of Det. D.D. Warren but I do tend to pick up this series when a new one comes out. I thought it was okay with interesting main plot. Sorry but the ending was lame. ( )

16 years ago Detective D.D. Warren worked a murder case. A teenage girl arrested for shooting her father. Now, the same woman is a suspect in the shooting death of her husband. What happened? Did Evie Carter shoot her husband? Did she kill her father? Could she possibly get away with murder twice? And why does a former kidnapping victim recognize Evie's husband?

Oh my gosh...this is the most twisted story I've read in a long time! I couldn't put it down! Every time I thought I had it figured out, the plot zinged another direction. Great book!

I'm not going to say anything else about the actual plot -- no spoilers from me. Much better to go into it with as little info as possible.

Never Tell is the 10th book in the Detective D.D. Warren series. While I have read a short story in this series, this is the first book that I've read. I will definitely be reading more! A note of caution: for those who haven't read the earlier books in the series, this story does have some serious spoilers for Find Her (book #8). I'd recommend reading that book first....or go into this one realizing you will know the plot for that earlier book. Even without reading the earlier book, I was easily able to pick up the threads of the plot, characters and run with it. It's not necessary to have read the earlier stories to enjoy this one....just realize it's going to spoil the plot for at least one of them. As for me, I'm going clear back to the beginning and starting at book one, Alone. I can tell I'm going to love this series! I like the characters. The little peeks into Det. Warren's home life give the story a bit of realism and humor on top the crime/thriller elements. Gardner's writing and story-telling are solid. This book kept my attention from start to finish.

This was a total binge read for me. I read late into the night because I couldn't put the book down! Any story that keeps me reading for hours deserves full stars -- full marks from me for this one!

**I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book from Penguin via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.** ( )
