"HARRY CLARKE is the story of a shy mid-western man who feels more himself when adopting the persona of a cocky Londoner, Harry Clarke. Moving to New York and presenting himself as an Englishman, he charms his way into a wealthy familys life, romancing two family members as the seductive and sexually precocious Harry, with more on his mind than love. With his spellbinding and emotionally nuanced story telling, Cale has created a riveting story of a man leading an outrageous double life"--Page [4] of cover.… (más)

Perhaps I would have enjoyed these 2 plays (this audiobook edition included another of Cale's one-man plays - Lillian - as well as some discussion with the author) better if I had seen them performed. Of the 2, I liked Lillian better than Harry Clarke. ( )

2018 Winter, audiobook:

The second of my free-to-member-selection performances, I did not know what to expect when I went into Harry Clarke or additional reading of Lilian. They were very different, which is what I think I've come to like best about these two pieces a month free. They definitely get me listening to things I don't usually think about doing it with, and that's wonderfully eye-opening and palate cleansing.

Harry Clarke was racy, swear-y, super surprising in places (you know what I mean if you've heard it!), but I definitely figured out the thing happening far earlier into the read than I think I was supposed to. With Lilian I wasn't entirely sure where it was going, which was twisty-turny in unexpected ways, as I new saw what was happening with how either story suddenly ended for a person. ( )

Harry Clarke with Bonus Performance of Lillian

Directed By, Leigh Silverman
Audiobook Performance Approx 3 Hours
How Obtained: Free from Audible for Prime Members

I have actually listened to this a couple of times. The last time I listened to it aside for a recently for this review was probably a couple of years ago give or take a few months.
Just the simple fact that I have taken the time to listen to an audiobook for multiple times should tell you that it is good. However I will tell you why it's good in my opinion.
This type of audio book is it always my cup of tea. As it is a recording of an actual play, it is also a solo performance plays.
In Harry Clarke, Billy Crudup is absolutely brilliant. The way that each line is delivered Sterling gauges you and keeps you interested in what's going on even without actually going to see the theater piece. Oddly enough this can be a bit of a thriller keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering what is he going to do next. Harry Clarke is doing his best to figure out who he is in this world in his own way while also being a bit of a con man either on accident or completely knowingly. I would say that might be a bit up to your interpretation. Harry Clarke definitely sucked me into this listen and it is very fun in my opinion. Having Lillian as an added bonus performance it's just the icing on the cake.
Lillian is also another solo performance that is included. It is similar in some aspects to Harry Clark however it is about a female who I believe is trying to figure out herself and her life. I wouldn't say that she is like a con artist or anything just a woman trying to do her best job at bumbling through life.
I like to think that Lillian and Harry Clarke are in the same universe and I think it would be awesome to have a moment where they cross paths at some point.
From some of the interviews that take place after the stories the author David Cale says that he has some ideas for a sequel to Harry Clarke and if that's the case I can't wait to be able to listen to it and honestly this got me to wanting to go see the theatrical performance.

In my opinion try not to miss out on this because it is incredibly fun to listen to even if you are new to performance arts like this and it's not usually your cup of tea you may enjoy it as I did. In particular I think I liked Lillian a little bit more.

I give this performance 5 out of 5 stars I found the story to be very brilliant and entertaining and the performances by both David Cale and Billy Crudup are just amazing.

Until next time,

Not really my thing at all. Two separate solo audio theater performances, kind of gratingly boring/annoying stories, although well performed. I like the concept here, but not very into the plots/characters at all.

However, what really made this bad was the commentary/interview afterward. Self-congratulatory and self-absorbed, meh. ( )
