I wish I could kidnap all the monsters for myself. I think Rilla's obscure living conditions (mish-mashed family, Earth-friendly mother, absentee father) will resonate with a lot more kids these days than when it was published. Overall, it's an adorable story with charming characters. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

In 'Monsters in Cybeerspace' Rilla has a computer and modem installed in her bedroom for homework, but she uses it as a way to try and contact her missing father. Today's helicopter parents would be horrified at her, or her monsters, sending messages to just about anybody and giving out personal information. Then again, those people participate in the overshare culture of Facebook, etc.
People do realize that even a "private" profile and all of its content is accessible to just about anybody who wants to bother to look at it right? Right? OK.
There was some verification on Rilla and her family's part, but not nearly enough to pass muster today. Even after one of her monsters runs up a ridiculous bill (billing internet by the hour? HA) her mother just shakes her finger. That seems so crazy to me, but adults really had no idea what kids were looking at back then. Now they do, but can't do anything about it...maybe the 90s were a better time.
Anyway, the book. Rilla still has to juggle bickering monsters - an Owl-ish monster who digests information and speaks English, a skateboarder and a shy hustler (at cards, c'mon people). They're pretty secondary again in comparison with Rilla's personal life. The book mostly acts as big set up for the conclusion in the next book.
