This book cleverly weaves a winter tale, leading readers through the activities, events, and natural phenomena associated with the season. Each page focuses on a different letter of the alphabet moving from letter A through letter Z, with each alphabet letter being used to begin the spelling of a distinct word. The illustration associated with each word conveys a visual image of the concept being discussed on each page. For instance, the letter "D" spells out "Deer" and is accompanied by a drawing of deer in a forest with the bare branches of autumn trees. This book helps students to practice the letters of the alphabet, and also to learn new concepts and word associations. I really enjoy poetry, and this was no exception! This is informative for young children not only in teaching them ABCs, but also in teaching them about this unique style of poetry. This would be a really fun and exciting way to introduce this style of poetry, and have the children create their own acrostic poems about different seasons, or about another subject they are currently studying (whether it be animals or weather or presidents). This could be fun for any elementary-age student! Winter: An Alphabet Acrostic, contains a winter acrostic poem beginning with each letter of the alphabet, accompanied by a woodcut illustration. The poems, the first few of which are AWAKE, BAKE, COLD, DEER, EAR, and FLURRY, are true to their titles and the subject of winter in content. There is no narrative connecting the poems, but they do not seem disjointed on account of a shared setting and theme. Some of the poems are stronger than others and a few of the word choices seem odd, such 'awake' when other 'A' words seem more relevant to winter, but the poems and illustrations tie everything back to winter. This book and Schnur's others, Spring, Summer, and Autumn, are great for introducing young readers to acrostic poetry and can also be enjoyed as an alphabet books for emerging readers. The seasonal themes make these books most appropriate in climates that have distinct seasons so that children can relate to the scenes and activities portrayed in the poems and illustrations. Teachers and school librarians can use Schnur's books to introduce a unit on writing acrostic poems; these books are also recommended for children's collections in public libraries. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
