This book follows a young girl named Raye who wants to become an engineer and her challenges to become one. She realizes the obstacles she faces in pursuing her career involve overcoming inequality and sexism. This does not stop Raye from staying true to herself. This is a great book to use in the classroom to address issues such as racial inequality and sexism. Raye decides to become an engineer after touring a Geman submarine in the 1940s. Although a gifted mathematician, she faces sexism and racial inequality on her journey to becoming a pioneer who changes the design of ships forever. I like this book because it not only shows mathematical applications that change the world but because it illustrates perseverance. This book follows the true story of Raye Montague and her journey to becoming an engineer. She had to face many challenges before getting to where she wanted to be. This book is great because by using literacy, it ties math, science, and history together. The history of sexism and racial inequality is present. It shows how math and science go hand in hand. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

This is a rhyming-text picture book about Raye Montague. After touring a German submarine in the early 1940s, young Raye set her sights on becoming an engineer. Little did she know sexism and racial inequality would challenge that dream every step of the way, even keeping her greatest career accomplishment a secret for decades. Through it all, the gifted mathematician persisted-- finally gaining her well-deserved title in history: a pioneer who changed the course of ship design forever.--Dust jacket.
