"You've likely heard of the historic Apollo 13 [mission]. But do you know about the mathematical genius who made sure that Apollo 13 returned safely home? As a child, Katherine Johnson loved to count. She counted the steps on the road, the number of dishes and spoons she washed in the kitchen sink, everything! Boundless, curious, and excited by calculations, young Katherine longed to know as much as she could about math, about the universe. From Katherine's early beginnings as a gifted student to her heroic accomplishments as a prominent mathematician at NASA, this is the story of a groundbreaking American woman who not only calculated the course of moon landings but, in turn, saved lives and made enormous contributions to history." -- Adapted from book jacket.… (más)

This book is about a very smart fantastic little girl who went on to help NASA as an adult with her science and math knowledge. This book is to be used in the classroom to help give an example of a future job students could have if they love math and science. But this book could also be used when teaching about space.

A young girl loves to count and look at the stars. She loved school and her love for learning made her a star student. This story tells about the life of Katerine Johnson and how she goes from a school teacher to working at NASA. ( )

If you loved 'Hidden Figures', you'll love this book! It goes into more details about her childhood and the struggles she had to face growing up. It also shows her struggles at NASA and the importance of her role that she their. Great book for math, history, and science ! ( )

I really enjoyed reading this story. I like how this story went all the way back to explain the beginning of the character's life and explained her childhood along with the success that she had later on in her life and in her career. ( )

This book is a biography of Katherine Johnson and how she landed her role as one of the most influential African American woman in space science. It tells her story of how she started out in her younger ages and how she had to overcome barriers to accomplish her dreams. Eventually she over came those barriers and helped safely land the astronauts back home, which is Apollo 23. She used her wise math skills with all of this. This book is very beautiful written for a children’s book and many great illustrations to go along with. I would use this book as a read aloud in my classroom to teach students that they can accomplish anything, even with many barriers they may cross. At the end of the book it does show a page of math equations that I can use as a group assignment of what does that exactly mean. It can also be used across other content areas such as science and social studies. ( )
