Here is a great story that connects with students challenges of school and balancing their important outside lives. I think the main character being a girl who is also involved with the vet clinic creates a great story that encourages gender equality. The plot can be a little sad about the harm of animals, so be careful if you have a sensitive reader. ( )

Magie MacKenzie is great with dogs, but her homework is out of control. When the clinic is flooded with sick and dying puppies, Maggie has to find a way to help. Maggie is sure it cant be a coincidence-somebody must be running a puppy mill

Maggie lives with Gran who is a veterinarian. Maggie loves to care for animals and is horrified when ten very ill puppies are brought in from an unclean puppy mill. Maggie wants to find the mill and rescue the rest of the dogs. When Maggie’s schoolwork suffers, Gran double-dog grounds her from the clinic. ( )
