Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, Hafsah Faizal's We Hunt the Flameâ??first in the Sands of Arawiya duologyâ??is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.
People lived because she killed. People died because he lived.
Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiyaâ??but neither wants to be.
War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfoldsâ??and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either ca

Once I got into this book I couldn't stop reading it. Starting the second one now. ( )

I really wanted to adore this book. I overall was interested in the characters and the world building. But I just did not feel super connected to the characters. The plot was super lush but at moments it became hard to follow. I really did like the pacing in the chapters but thought the pace of the book overall was not as strong as I wanted. I really was excited about the world building and love the author take not he world but the book did not wow me. I will still check out book 2, and prob re-read the book at some point. ( )

unfortunately, this story couldn't keep my interest. it was too dry for me. the sultan felt like a cartoon villain. I understand the grief from his wife and all, but he felt hammy from what I read. I will say I was pleasantly surprised to see a spark of humanness in him before he went into the usual diatribe 'the love you have for others is what makes you weak hahahahah'

zafira was kind of just there, but I understood her motivation for magic. if something was just beyond your fingertips, wouldn't you look for it too? ( )
