A solid, self contained fantasy story about changelings, fairies, an underground kingdom and an evil sorceress. The strength in this is the integration of ideas and concepts found in LGBTQ stories like coming out and chosen families. Hoping that Aldridge moves to more overt queer representation in later books. An excellent story about families, friends, and magic with great illustrations. With changelings and fairies, it would be a great choice for someone interested in the themes of Holly Black's work who isn't quite ready for the violence and more mature elements of those stories. ( )

The illustrations are beautiful and the storyline was very well done. I am not a huge fantasy reader other than with a select few well-known novels (Harry Potter, etc.), especially when it comes to fantasy that is a bit harder to find familiarity with. I will say I did find the "switched at birth" and finding ones' identity storyline very relatable for middle grade readers. Not to say that all kids can relate to being switched at birth but they may be able to relate if they were perhaps adopted into a family. I also really liked the fact that there is a little bit of realistic fiction with the "normal" world we are used to and then you get into the fantasy fiction of the underground world which is essentially not too difficult to find once you realize where it is. Overall it was a well written and beautifully illustrated book.

I did like how Edmund and Cinder grew to love each other with Alexis following them on their quest regardless of the fact that she had no magical abilities. It did have familiarity in that sense that would draw readers in. A curriculum with graphic novels, art, or family would do well. ( )

Estranged is a graphic novel that tells the story of two boys who were stitched at birth. One is human and the other is from the 'below world.' The overall concept of this novel made it a page turner to be read in a single sitting. Edmund and eventually Cinder engage the reader in their feelings about family, and where they fit into each of their individual worlds. The contrast between the two world and the magic filled in one leaves the reader wishing they had the option to follow a dark tunnel into another world.

I like the thought that was put into the outlines of the pages changing from black and white depending on which world the characters were in. I do feel that the book started off quickly without much back story into how the boys were switched in the first place. As a reader I was also left wondering what happens to the King and Queen of the below world that were turned into rats at the beginning of the story. ( )

my very first graphic novel I ever read!! The story was well written, with a motif of Prince and Pauper motif. I loved how the human sister takes on going for the journey and caring for both boys. Twins who were separated at birth, learn to love each other. I loved the family is people who love you not who are blood (especially in this case where they were adopted/separated). Looking forward to reading more.
