As a woman of a certain age, she knows that she has been bypassed in her career and is now focused just on being the best detective that she can be. When the rug is pulled from under her by her boss, Hulda's retirement plans are cast into chaos. She manages to convince her boss to let her work on one cold case of her choice as her career draws to a close. Hulda selects a case where an immigrant woman was to have committed suicide, a finding that she has never been at ease with. Hulda's investigation ruffles feathers both with her colleagues and with some pillars of the Rejkyavik community. The upshot is that things are made harder for her the closer that she gets to the truth. This was an OK book but, frankly, I really hated the ending. There was, I think, one chapter too many and the opportunity to leave the viewer with a really appropriate ending was passed over in order to plug the next book in the series. I might read that, but I'm not hugely tempted.
Expertly plotted, with an ending that’s a true shocker, The Darkness is the first book in a trilogy featuring this engaging investigator, which is good news. Pertenece a las seriesHidden Iceland (1) Premios
"Spanning the icy streets of Reykjavik, the Icelandic highlands and cold, isolated fjords, The Darkness is an atmospheric thriller from Ragnar Jonasson, one of the most exciting names in Nordic Noir. The body of a young Russian woman washes up on an Icelandic shore. After a cursory investigation, the death is declared a suicide and the case is quietly closed. Over a year later Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir of the Reykjavík police is forced into early retirement at 64. She dreads the loneliness, and the memories of her dark past that threaten to come back to haunt her. But before she leaves she is given two weeks to solve a single cold case of her choice. She knows which one: the Russian woman whose hope for asylum ended on the dark, cold shore of an unfamiliar country. Soon Hulda discovers that another young woman vanished at the same time, and that no one is telling her the whole story. Even her colleagues in the police seem determined to put the brakes on her investigation. Meanwhile the clock is ticking. Hulda will find the killer, even if it means putting her own life in danger" -- No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

I don't think it was the writing of the book, as much as the translation of this one. It seemed very stilted and choppy.
I don't think I will be continuing with the Hidden Iceland series. ( )
