Retelling of the Medea/Jason myth from the viewpoints of Medea and Nauplios, a fisherman's son, an Argonaut and her faithful friend through the years. Medea, Princess of Colchis, priestess of the goddess Hekate, and sorceress/healer helps Jason steal the Golden Fleece and the bones of Phryxos, who had ridden and flown on the golden ram. As the author tells the story, Medea, when Jason wished to cast her aside for a younger woman, flees with Nauplios to Corinth, where the Corinthians stone Medea's innocent children to death because of the Corinthians' anger at her murders. I was glad the contemptible Jason was punished as he deserved to be. I liked the changes the author wrought in the story, except so much occultism and graphic descriptions left me uncomfortable. I liked hearing Medea's side of the story. Our sympathies lie with her. And Nauplios kept us informed of the quest, also his lifelong love. ( )
