Meanwhile, Danny Allen, former scholarship pupil at the school and destined to have a successful and industrious career, has more or less given up on life. He is a recovering alcoholic, with a failing relationship and no job. It is only when he is told that he needs to find employment or lose his benefits that he ends up working in a care home, where he encounters James and they strike up a friendship. I’ll leave the description at that, as I don’t want to give away any spoilers. The story is narrated by James and Danny, with each taking alternate chapters. I really liked the book and found it to be an undemanding read, despite the subject matter. Mike Gayle has always written enjoyable novels, but usually on a much lighter note. Here he delves into more serious issues, such as learning to live with a brain injury which meant that James had lost his independence, and Danny struggling as he blamed himself for a tragic event in his past. I think I could see where the book was going and the ending was no real surprise; however, it is not a thriller or a whodunnit and every ending doesn’t need to have a twist. If you are a fan of Mike Gayle or authors such as Nick Hornby, I would certainly recommend this book. (  ) Ruth72 | Oct 19, 2020 | (  ) karenshann | Dec 31, 2019 | I had previously read a couple of Mike Gayle books (Dinner for Two and The To-Do-List) and considered them to be Chick-Lit, but written by a man - Guy-Lit. The Man I Think I Know was in another class entirely, one of my favourite books of 2018. It still contained Mike's trade-mark humour, but this was also full of empathy and emotion, and still remains with me even though I read it nearly six months ago. The two main characters had been to private school together, yet both were in some way disabled. James DeWitt was from a wealthy family, while Danny Allen was from the wrong side of the tracks, but circumstances have a way of producing outcomes that no-one would have expected and they are thrown together in a fascinating, endearing twosome, that had me turning the pages enthusiastically. I don't think I want to say too much more because this is a book that should unravel before your eyes and it would be a shame to spoil the pleasure with too much information. So I will just say that I hope you get the chance to pick up this book, and if so, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. ( ) DubaiReader | Mar 6, 2019 | I have always considered Mike Gayle's books as 'chick-lit' for both sexes, lightweight and fairly pleasant but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The tragic circumstances that lead Danny and James back to each other are handled sensitively and the bromance is amusing and heartfelt. The only jarring note for me was the relationship between James and Vicky, it didn't really ring true and felt like a plot device. Other than that this is a heartwarming tale.
