Fantasy. Fiction. Horror. HTML:Vampire hunter Anita Blake has always managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there’s a monster that even she doesn’t know how to fight...
A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita’s fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend, Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it’s the first trip she gets to take with just wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it’s not all fun and games and bachelor parties…
In this tropical paradise, Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes.
When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blow-up within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse, her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There’s a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that’s rendering those around her helpless. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret—if she survives at all, that is….

I bought this book thinking there was every likelihood that I wouldn't be able to read it. I'm terrified of snakes to the point of calling it a phobia. The title alone had me concerned that it would be too much for me. Luckily for me, this is yet another relationship novel in the series. I keep reading because I love Anita, Jean Claude, and even Edward. I just have to remember that the focus of the books has changed from hunting "big bads" to working on relationship issues. That said, snake lycanthropes do make a minor appearance. They are discussed at the beginning, then it's relationship drama, wedding drama, missing women, wedding drama, relationship drama, bad guy of unknown origin, more drama, and snake lycanthropes at the end. The ending with the creature was badly explained, and, in my opinion, was just thrown in for those of us who miss the good old days of hunting the bad guys. It's not a bad book. It's just not about the monsters anymore. ( )

One of the Better Installments in the Series.

I've followed this series from the beginning and can truly say this is one of the better, less "predictable" reads of Hamilton's recent years. Serpentine is captivating in the style of her early Anita Blake books. More intrigue, drama, action, etc. A magical, sexy, murder mystery! I have a friend who is addicted to this series and he has pushed me to pick it up again I am so glad. I have already picked up Sucker Punch which is the next book and have been listening to it while catching up on reviews of books I have rolled through during my readathon. This is a who done it with our favorite group of supernatural branches of police. Who doesn't love a good serial killer hunt with our favorite character’s? Yet the location is new, the magic is new to an extent which makes it more interesting. We are finally seeing cracks in the poly group that keeps Anita whole and I have to say I am happy to see the change they were sounding too perfect and too sexy all the time. Anita is still her insecure self and fighting with her morals but it didn’t bother me so much because this the such a fun read that I got lost in the story. Of course, if you haven’t read any of the series start with book one this series is not one that you would enjoy if you skipped around.

I don't care what you all think, I love this series. However, I am still waiting for some real progression in the Anita/Jean Claude arc. The wedding would be nice since it's been 4 books already.

After re-reading this a lot, I am finding that Nathaniel is really getting on my nerves. Seriously? He's bitching about not getting sex more than twice a day? Micah and Anita are both working a lot of hours and he isn't doing anthing but stripping a couple of nights a week. Literally, he's complaining about not getting enough sex, saying they used to do it twice a day every day. When Micah says that he can't keep up with that kind of schedule forever, Nathaniel say's "I can". I love Nathaniel, but Laurell needs to give him an attitude change or else he is going to ruin the series.

Also,,,, I am TOTALLY shipping Anita and Olaf - Hear me out.... Lion to Call. Saves her from his possible attempts at hurting her, and possibly puts him on a better, less serial-killer path. Plus, honestly, I kind of want to see them do it. Hell, it's a book, I want to see this happen. LOL! ( )

Edward and Donna are finally getting married, but of course, there is a LOT of drama. More repetitious whining by Anita and others. Olaf is in the book as well. So, lots of my favorite characters in this one. But. But sooo many buts. At least the sex was dialed way down. There was hardly any in it.

it was a disappointment. As usual with Hamilton, lots of boring stuff for two-thirds of the book then boom! Let's wrap this up. There weren't enough breadcrumbs in the beginning to make the bad guy make sense. There's a new type (very ancient, really) of lycanthropy and Micah and the Coalition are trying to help the afflicted. So there's a lot going on than just a wedding. Yet, it's still boring. The Dixie character is another plot device. These characters are supposed to be in their 30s and 40s, yet they act like high schoolers.

But two women go missing. Is Olaf going against the promises he made to Edward and Anita, or is someone or something else at work? Is it a human bad guy or something supernatural? Nathanial is a person of interest because the kill looks like a lycanthrope and he was flirting with the missing girl and arguing with the other missing person.

The big scene with Nathaniel flirting with bridesmaids from another wedding felt so out of character. It was a total plot device to set him up. I really don't like the evolution of the Nathaniel character. Supposedly, because of his metaphysical ties to Anita, Nathaniel is acquiring more of Anita's attitude--just what we need, another whining character who always wants everything their way.

I had high hopes for this book since all of my favorites were in it, plus, a wedding! Bit no. I was soo disappointed. This is only getting three stars because Edward is in it. ( )

I really loved Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series books but I did feel like she lost the thread a bit in the middle of the series. I am glad to say that it seems like she is focusing more on the storyline and less on the sex of late which makes the books better in my opinion. I am reviewing this book based on an ARC received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion. ( )

Serpentine by Laurell K. Hamilton
Urban Fantasy - Aug. 7th, 2018
4 stars

In the Serpentine, Laurell K. Hamilton brings humor and her usual mix of mesmerizing sex and violence. This long awaited book will thrill fans as the darkly enigmatic and coldly practical vampire hunter, Edward is finally getting married! Edward has worked and helped train Anita in her career as a vampire hunter/U.S. Marshal. As his best friend and a woman it has been difficult to get along with Edward’s love interest Donna. Donna has always been suspicious of their relationship although they have never been intimate. But Edward believes Donna’s feelings are in the past and Anita has been invited to be a part of their wedding. Anita brings her lovers Micah and Nathaniel. But soon jealousy rears its ugly head and then a serial murderer darkens the happy nuptials. Plus Micah is distracted by a family of snake shifters who need his help. As Anita takes it upon herself to try to solve the murders, protect Edward’s family from a catastrophic meltdown and support Micah. She has her hand full. But the wedding is in jeopardy when a conniving bride’s maid and sudden doubts from the bride bring the wedding to a standstill! This joyous occasion may not end so well, Anita save it from utter disaster?

There are plenty of things to enjoy in this erotic fantasy/murder mystery. Anita has grown more comfortable with herself and her sexuality. I liked that she isn’t as self conscious and has seemed to settle down with those she loves. Anita’s books are known for their erotic scenes, however, this book seems to have less sexual scenes than usual which may be a let down for some fans. Plus, her vampire lover, Jean-Claude makes a very minor role in this book. Many fans (including myself) will feel that the best part of the storyline is the cold and calculating Edward. That he could actually marry such a sweet lady when he is such a remorseless killer is hard to understand. His ‘secret’ life with Donna is compelling reading because it is so strange. The change in his personality from when he is with his fiancee is so different than how he is in his normal ‘professional’ life is fascinating reading. Even now, I still can’t really envision Edward marrying!

The mystery in the story is interesting but somewhat anticlimactic. Most of the plot is centered on the wedding and the fights and difficulties of trying to keep it from not being called off. I wish the author has spent more time developing the snake shifter story and the mystery. The snake shifters seemed unfinished and tragic. I felt that the author didn’t take full advantage of incorporating them into the story. Overall, this was a highly entertaining read, Laurell K. Hamilton is unparalleled in creating characters that you can’t forget. I can’t wait to find out how Anita will finally settle her love life and if her wedding will also take place soon!
