Excerpt from Selections From mile Zola: Edited With Introduction, Notes and Bibliography ON a beautiful midsummer morning at M dan, in his fascinating home, M. Zola gave me the authorization to prepare this series of extracts from his works. It is a grief that gratitude can no longer be expressed to him personally and that the splendor of his complete yet unfinished work can have no continuation. There are some men who, as if instinctively, inspire one with a desire to rise and to salute. M. Zola so impressed one, at least, of his ad mirers. The grave and courteous presence, the kind ness and the modesty, the sense of intellect and its gigantic results, and the feeling of enormous power and mental force, these combined to stimulate and to strengthen the appreciation of the personality and the creations of Emile Zola. I renew to his memory the expression of my thanks to him. And I add others to M. Eug ne Fasquelle, who so willingly ratified the authorization of this book.
