- For my part, Sir, I think all Christians, whether Papists or Protestants, agree in the essential articles, and that thier differences are trivial, and rather political than religious.
- Over een collega: To be sure, he is a tree that cannot produce good fruit: he only bears crabs (= wilde appels). But, Sir, a tree that produces a great many crabs is better than a tree which produces only a few.
- Over Schotten: But, Sir, let me tell you, the noblest prospect which a Scotsman ever sees, is the high road that leads him to England.
- Over gelijkheid: Sir, you levellers wish to level down as far as themselves; but they cannot bear levelling up to themselves. They would all have some people under them; why not then have some people above them?
"The life of Samuel Johnson" is zonder enige twijfel een meesterwerk en dit boekje geeft een aardig beeld om eens kennis te maken met Dr Johnson en zijn biograaf.
