In questo libro l'autore trova un nuovo approccio per provare a spiegare in modo semplice cosa sia l'ikigai. Infatti, per quanto il termine possa essere tradotto con "ragione di vita", l'autore spiega che si tratta di molto di più, e per farlo utilizza degli esempi concreti tratti dalla vita quotidiana giapponese al fine di permetterci di capire e far tesoro di questa fede incrollabile nei confronti della vita.

In poche parole, per essere felici bisogna accettare sé stessi. Accettarsi è uno dei compiti più importanti e impegnativi che ci toccano nella vita. Eppure è anche una delle cose più facili, semplici e gratificanti che possiamo fare per noi stessi: una ricetta low cost e a manutenzione zero per la felicità.
L'epifania è che, paradossalmente, accettarsi per come si è spesso richiede di dimenticarsi di sé, soprattutto se siamo alle prese con un Io illusorio che ci sembra tanto gratificante: per accettarsi ed essere felici occorre lasciare andare quell'illusione.
