1068. Salomon Ben Isaac has returned to Troyes to take over the family vineyard and start a yeshiva. This is a story of the Jewish community and his family’s part in it’s life. Good characters, good story, nice start for the series. ( )

Ms. Anton has taken what little is know about Rashi and his family and her research about that time in France and her Judaic knowledge to give the reader a sense of what life was like then and to share what she has learned from Rashi and other Jewish scholars. She has created relatives and given them occupations to show, for example, what medical practices were like and how to make parchment. The book is a very readable way to learn about everyday life. And the origin of champagne.

the Afterword explains what has a historic basis and what the author made up. She notes that there is a partial bibliography on her website, www.rashisdaughters.com. ( )

Historical fiction based on research of the daughter of an 11th century Jewish scholar. Very interesting, and to my surprise, full of sex! ( )

If the Christians educate their sons, they do so not for God, but for gain, in order that one brother, if he be a cleric, may help his father and mother and his other brothers. . . But the Jews, out of zeal for God and love of the law, put as many sons as they have to letters, that each may understand God's law. . . and not only his sons, but his daugthers.---Anonymous student of Peter Abelard, twelfth century Paris
Declared Ben Azzai: "A man must teach his daughter Torah so that if she drinks she will know that her merit will suspend her punishments." Rav Eliezer said: "Whoever teaches his daughter Torah teaches her lechery." ---Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sotah 20a
