When an explosion rips apart a Chicago building, the lives of three women are forever altered. A year later, Cecily is in mourning. She was supposed to be in the building that day. Instead, she stood on the street and witnessed it going down, with her husband and best friend inside. Kate, now living thousands of miles away, fled the disaster and is hoping that her past won't catch up with her. And Franny, a young woman in search of her birth mother, watched the horror unfold on the morning news, knowing that the woman she was so desperate to reconnect with was in the building. Now, despite the marks left by the tragedy, they all seem safe. But as its anniversary dominates the media, the memories of that terrifying morning become dangerous triggers. All these women are guarding important secrets. Just how far will they go to keep them?… (más)

The Good Liar by Catherine McKenzie is a 2018 Lake Union Publication.

An explosion in Chicago kills over five hundred people, disrupting the lives of three women in ways they never could have imagined. One is now a widow and single mother, one is a woman tempted to start her life over from scratch, and one who is desperately seeking her birth mother- a woman who presumably died in the fire…

This book is more of a character study than an outright novel of suspense. The explosion is believed to be a result of a gas leak- which means there could be compensation for the survivors. In the meantime, a viral photograph of Cicely, whose husband died that day, makes her an instant celebrity- a grieving widow- the perfect face for the survivor’s compensation fund. But Cicely is guilt ridden for many reasons- one of them being that she was supposed to have been in the building, too, but she’d been running late that day- and the other reason has to do with why she had been set to meet her husband there that day…

As the novel unfolds, we learn about Cicely’s inner turmoil, the secrets of her marriage, her best friend- also presumed dead- and the young woman who was looking for her birth mother who draws strangely close to the situation- and who may have ulterior motives…

The book is just as much of a messy family drama and character study as it is a mystery. It was absorbing at times, but I grew impatient with the slow pacing. It was thought-provoking, too, on occasion, but the suspense building was flat- with revelations quietly unfolding. This could be effective- but it felt anticlimactic, too.

The conclusion, though not exactly ambiguous- was not altogether satisfying. At the end of the day, I was not sure how I felt about the story or how to rate it. I think it was a failure to understand the thoughts and actions of the characters- which was riddled with poor, morally dubious decisons-and an inability to relate or connect to them- on top of the way it all came together in the end, that left me feeling mostly apathetic.

While the story had some merits, overall, it failed to make a big impression.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for providing me a copy of this book.
I never thought about how people could take advantage of a disaster and use it to escape. THE GOOD LIAR follows the lives of three women following a building fire that kills over five-hundred people.

The book is told from three different POV and each woman has a take on the fire, their life before it, and what happens afterward. Suspense is cleverly woven throughout each woman's story as the reader wonders how they are all connected...and who is lying. A great set of characters that I could vividly imagine in this story that tests marriage, friendship, and trust. Very clever storyline!

An awful tragedy, three women, Cecily, Kate, and Franny and a whole host of secrets and lies.
An absolutely brilliantly clever psychological thriller that will have you hooked. ( )

A fitting title for a novel holding so many secrets.
As the anniversary of the explosion that took the lives of over 500 people approaches, a documentary is being made about the effects on 3 families who've lost loved ones to the tragic accident. Cecily in particular, is a big part of it since a photo was taken of her that day at the site that now has made her face the poster for that deadly shocking day. Cecily has kept a secret about her reason for intending to meet her husband there, but she is not the only one. There are deeper, darker secrets that will be revealed. This was a real page turner that started with an explosion and ended with a bang!
