Head down. Don't look up. Never make eye contact. Those were the words I lived by growing up, the words that protected me in an unsafe home. But words are only letters, and eventually even they couldn't keep his hands off me. Hoping to leave behind the shattered life of my past, I find myself in a boring, small town, with an aunt I've never met, and at a school I loathe. But soon I learn that not everything in this world is as black and white as I've determined. Sometimes those we are so quick to judge often need a second, third, or even fourth time to make a first impression. And often, there are friendships and even love waiting just around the corner, if we are brave enough to take the first step. Am I brave? Or will I hide behind these tattered gloves of mine forever?… (más)

As hinted by the blurb, Tattered Gloves is a heavy book with mature themes. Honestly, I prefer to read more light-hearted novels, but once in a while I pick up something more angst ridden. I was definitely intrigued when I saw JL Berg's latest novel. I loved Within These Walls, so I thought I jumped on the opportunity to read Tattered Gloves and I can happily say that it lived up to my expectations.

What I Liked:
Tattered Gloves revolves around the main character Willow, along with her eccentric aunt and newfound friends Sam and Allison. One of my favorite parts of the novel were the characters. It was refreshing to see the plot focus on such positive characters. I feel like in many books set in high school, the main character faces people who use her/him as gossip fodder or just treats her/him badly all around because of their differences. It was nice to see Willow surround herself by people who truly wanted the best for her. The characters helped build to the themes of trust, acceptance, and overcome found in the novel.
The character development for Willow was crafted well too. In time, she finds the strength to battle her demons with a large help from her friends and aunt who show her unwavering love and support. I especially loved Allison and her optimistic personality, and Sam with his kindness and determination.

Things I Disliked:
While the overall plot of the novel was well paced, I felt like the ending was a bit too coincidental and rushed.

But other than that, I enjoyed Tattered Gloves and recommend it for others looking for a touching story about strength, acceptance, and love. ( )

Willow has a chance to start over after a childhood full of neglect and abuse – but will her past prevent her from accepting the love she deserves?

Willow is sent to live with her aunt after she has spent most of her life exposed to her mother’s lifestyle of prostitution, but she can’t forget the one night her mother’s job stole her innocence. She is overwhelmed by a new high school, an afterschool job at a local book store, and classmates who tease her, as well as a few who want to get to know her better and become friends. She can’t give her trust freely, but if she is going to be able to move on and make a life beyond what the past has taken from her, she has to find a way to open her heart to the possibility that there is goodness in others.

Willow’s certainty that she is damaged goods, unworthy of a life full of friends, support, and happiness, is something too many young readers might relate to. This isn’t just an entertaining read, but one that will offer hope to anyone suffering the lasting effects of an abusive relationship or event.
