Inoue is well-known for his historical novels and Blue Wolf is in this genre. In this instance, it is difficult to distinguish between what is historical narrative and fiction. The infrequent dialogue is certainly fiction, but most of the characters and much of the action is rooted in history. The conquest of central Asia by Temujin, later known as Genghis (Chinggis) Khan, in the 1200s is a compelling, bloody story. Inoue concentrates his story on Temujin's concern about his own patrimony and that of his first son, Jochi (meaning "guest"). The question remains unresolved, and colors Temujin's relationships with his wife and concubines, as well as his sons and field commanders. Inoue's psychological speculations add to our understanding of Temujin's character. ( )
