The Longest Silence by Debra Webb is a suspenseful and surprisingly redemptive addition to the Shades of Death series. Although this latest release is the fourth in the series it can be read as a standalone although I recommend the previous installments as well. FBI Agent Tony LeDoux has been on a downward spiral for quite some time. He is pretty much at his lowest point when his sister Angie calls to ask for his help in locating his nineteen year old niece Tiffany. Although not "officially" missing, the circumstances of her disappearance are alarming and very out of character for the college student. Tony does not waste any time beginning his search for Tiffany. He quickly crosses paths with Joanna Guthrie who knows all too well that Tiffany is in grave danger. Following the horrific events of a case Tony worked on, he has lost pretty much everything. He is now divorced, drinking too much and his FBI career is essentially over. Despite his problems, he does not hesitate to begin searching Tiffany but he is not sure if the local police will give him any information. Tony is relieved when the police chief welcomes his assistance but once the FBI becomes involved, he is warned to stay out of the way. With his niece's life on the line, Tony ignores their admonition to not interfere in the case and with Joanna's help, they quickly unearth a few leads. Eighteen years earlier, Joanna was a college student who also vanished in a manner eerily similar to Tiffany and fellow student, Vickie Parton. Although she returned from her ordeal, her life has never been the same. Joanna has uncovered several other cases that resemble her terrifying experience all those years ago. Although she has interviewed the survivors from these other cases, she has no idea who is responsible for the kidnappings or where the victims are being held. With Tiffany's disappearance, Joanna decides it is time to face her demons once and for all and hopefully bring Tiffany and Vickie safely home. The Longest Silence is an enthralling mystery that is quite puzzling. Joanna is slow to share her experience with Tony but she is committed to finding the kidnapped young women. Tony unexpectedly finds redemption as he briefly reconnects with Bobbie Gentry and Nick Shade. The investigation into Tiffany's disappearance moves in fits and starts with some of the people whom Tony interviewed crossing paths with someone out for revenge. With unexpected plot twists and stunning turns, Debra Webb brings this fourth installment in the Shades of Death series to an action-packed conclusion. Joanne Guthrie, held captive for fourteen days some eighteen years ago, has never talked about what happened during her captivity. But now more young women are missing, and she’s ready to tell what she knows. Former FBI agent Tony LaDoux has personal reasons for his involvement in the case . . . his niece Tiffany is one of the missing women and his sister begged for his help. Can Joanna and Tony rescue the women before tragedy strikes? This, the fourth in the Shades of Death series, works well as a stand-alone since there is sufficient backstory for readers new to the series. Strong characters, a twisty, unpredictable plot, and ever-mounting tension all combine to keep readers on the edge of their seats as the story slowly unfolds and unexpected reveals add to the intrigue. Readers will find much to appreciate in this compelling tale. A suspenseful bonus story, “The Blackest Crimson,” is a bonus in this edition. Recommended. Joanna Guthrie has been living her life on the run for the past eighteen years. But you can never truly run from your past and that's what she has been trying to do. Now that the only other person that knew what had happened all those years ago has died and it appears circumstances might be repeating themselves with another abduction, Joanna knows she has to confront the past once and for all. It is upon her return to Georgia that Joanna connects with former FBI agent Tony LeDoux. Tony is in town because his niece, a college student, is missing and initially no one takes her absence seriously. Tony's sister knows that her daughter wouldn't disappear without her cellphone, purse, or any clothes, but the local authorities aren't so sure until another student goes missing. It is now a case of beat the clock because Joanna knows that although two girls have been reported missing, there are actually three girls that have been abducted and only two will walk away. The good thing about Joanna's return to Georgia is that she is beginning to remember things from those days in captivity. The bad thing about Joanna's return is that she has recognized several key players in her abduction and they just might be willing to do anything to ensure her silence. Can Joanna recall enough to save Tony's niece and the others before it is too late? I've had the pleasure of reading several books in the Shades of Death series in the past, so I was already familiar with and enjoyed Ms. Webb's ability to pull me into a story as a reader. She has repeated that ability with The Longest Silence. I sat down and began reading this book and with the exception of a brief break to take migraine pain medication (another weather-induced migraine), I did not stop. I liked Joanna and Tony and sincerely hope there will be more from these two in the future (hint, hint). Joanna's captivity backstory from eighteen years ago is nicely interwoven with the current abductees story. Ms. Webb provides hints of romance and undertones of horror in this taut suspense-thriller. There were also several surprise twists thrown in towards the end but it all worked quite nicely towards the end (no, I won't tell you what the surprises where or how it ends, read the book!). If you've read anything by Ms. Webb, then I probably don't have to tell you to read The Longest Silence (but I will just in case). If you've never read anything by Ms. Webb and enjoy suspense thrillers, then grab yourself a copy of The Longest Silence to read. If you're not sure about suspense thrillers but are looking for something a bit different to read, then grab a copy of The Longest Silence to read. I hope to read more from Ms. Webb and the Shades of Death series in the future. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. HTML:From the author of Trust No One A killer stole her voice. Now she's ready to take it back. Don't miss the chilling Shades of Death series from USA TODAY bestselling author Debra Webb. Joanna Guthrie was free. She had been for eighteen years??or so she needed everyone to believe. What really happened during the longest fourteen days of her life, when she and two other women were held captive by the worst kind of killer, wasn't something she could talk about. Not after what she'd had to do to survive. But when more women go missing in an eerily similar manner, Jo knows her prolonged silence will only seal their fates. She's finally ready to talk; she just needs someone to listen. FBI special agent Tony LeDoux can't deny he finds Jo compelling??he's just not sure he believes her story. But with the clock ticking, Jo will do anything to convince him, even if it means unearthing long-buried secrets that will land them squarely in the crosshairs of the kil No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

There were a lot of different players in this novel, and I was sometimes a little confused as to who each one was because they would sometimes be referred to by their first name, and other times by their last name and for a little bit I had to try and figure out who they were talking about or who was talking. The main characters (Tony LaDoux and Joanna Guthrie) were pretty well-developed. Other more minor characters less so, but that's to be expected.
The plot itself was relatively well-designed and well-developed. When new information kept coming out, there was a lot that I wasn't expecting. I did see the kind-of romance happening between LaDoux and Jo, but that usually happens in these types of novels, so it wasn't much of a surprise. I don't think I've read anything with this kind of twisted plot before. It definitely kept me guessing (and there were also times where I was like, why aren't you doing blah-blah, that would probably help you).
All in all, a pretty quick read and I would recommend if you like suspense, puzzles, or whodunits. ( )
